Background: Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is highly prevalent in the pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) and associated with worse clinical course. Trials in adult ICU demonstrate rapid restoration of vitamin D status using an enteral loading dose is safe and may improve outcomes. There have been no published trials of rapid normalization of VDD in the pediatric ICU.

Training programs teach communication, but educational methods are not feasible for entire populations of clinicians. To address this healthcare quality gap, we developed a Communication Quality Assurance intervention.

Methods: Transcripts from 125 primary care providers who conveyed Sickle Cell Anemia carrier status to standardized parents were content analyzed using categories derived from Cutrona and Suhr's social support taxonomy. Frequencies and cross-tabulation matrices were calculated to study providers' social support utilization.
Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative analysis was to assess parental acceptability of large-scale, telephone follow-up regarding their infants' newborn screening (NBS) results, indicating carrier status for sickle cell hemoglobinopathy (SCH) and cystic fibrosis (CF).
Methods: Analysis of 195 interview transcripts focused on parents' responses to two open-ended questions: "What was your reaction to being called by me?" and "What do you think of the state NBS program having follow-up people calling parents like you?" Responses were coded using conventional content analysis procedures, and nonparametric tests were performed to analyze quantitative data.
Results: Most parents reported favorable opinions about the follow-up.
Objective: Newborn screening (NBS) identifies genetic carriers for sickle cell hemoglobinopathy and cystic fibrosis. We aimed to identify factors during initial NBS carrier results disclosure by primary care providers (PCPs) that influenced parents' experiences and reactions.
Methods: Open-ended responses from telephone interviews with 270 parents of carriers were analyzed using mixed-methods.
Well-organized conversation can improve people's ability to comprehend and retain information. As part of a long-term effort to adapt Quality Improvement techniques for communication, we developed an explicit-criteria method to assess usage of three organizing behaviors (OBs): 'opening behaviors' to establish goals; 'structuring behaviors' to guide patients through conversation; and 'emphasizing behaviors' that signal a need for attention. Pairs of abstractors independently reviewed transcripts in a demonstration sample of conversations between physicians and standardized parents after newborn screening identifies carrier status for sickle cell disease.

It has been shown that the diameter of TiO2 nanotube layers controls the cellular behaviour of cells involved in the bone-forming process in vitro. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of the diameter of TiO2 nanotubes on peri-implant bone formation and the expression of bone matrix proteins in vivo.

From 2000 to 2007, 19 Austrian children (aged 6-18 years) had serologically verified nephropathia epidemica. Common clinical features were abdominal/flank/back pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, headache, and transient visual disturbances. Acute renal failure was present in 18 (95%) patients.

Eculizumab, a humanized mAb against complement protein C5, inhibits activation of the terminal complement pathway.
Design, Setting, Participants, & Measurements: We report an adolescent with relapsing unclassified aHUS.
Toxic epidermal necrolysis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome are potentially life-threatening skin disorders. We report that a 3-month-old infant, a patient with toxic epidermal necrolysis, who in addition to a standard resuscitation protocol for burns received treatment with Suprathel (PolyMedics Innovations GmbH, Filderstadt, Germany) and fatty gauze as topical wound dressings in the form of a whole body cover with complete recovery. This is the first case report of Suprathel being used successfully in a baby with toxic epidermal necrolysis.

A local outbreak of Shiga toxin (Stx)-producing enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7 causing severe hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) was found to be caused by environmental transmission. Automated ribotyping and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis revealed that four stx2-positive EHEC isolates obtained from two unrelated children, one mother and one cow were identical. Results of an epidemiological investigation strongly suggest that both children were infected via a meadow strewn with manure containing EHEC-positive feces from the infected cow a few days prior to the onset of illness.
