Researchers are increasingly utilizing physiological data like electrodermal activity (EDA) to understand how stress "gets under the skin." Results of EDA studies in autistic children are mixed, with some suggesting autistic hyperarousal, others finding hypoarousal, and yet others detecting no difference compared to non-autistics. Some of this variability likely stems from the different techniques used to assess EDA.

Update on Outbreak of Fungal Meningitis Among US Residents Who Received Epidural Anesthesia at Two Clinics in Matamoros, Mexico.

Background: Public health officials are responding to an outbreak of fungal meningitis among patients who received procedures under epidural anesthesia at 2 clinics (River Side Surgical Center and Clinica K-3) in Matamoros, Mexico, during 1 January to 13 May 2023. This report describes outbreak epidemiology and outlines interim diagnostic and treatment recommendations.

Methods: Interim recommendations for diagnosis and management were developed by the Mycoses Study Group Research Education and Consortium (MSGERC) based on the clinical experience of clinicians caring for patients during the current outbreak or during previous outbreaks of healthcare-associated fungal meningitis in Durango, Mexico, and the United States.

Dissociation and fractionation of heavy and light chains from IgG monoclonal antibodies.

A basic method for dissociation and fractionation of monoclonal IgG heavy and light chain is described. It employs less noxious and hazardous reagents than the classical mercaptoethanol/propionic acid process and replaces size exclusion chromatography with cation exchange on a monolith to improve productivity. Significant scope remains to refine the conditions.

Deficiencies in myeloid antigen-presenting cells in women with cervical squamous intraepithelial lesions.

Background: There is little information on the function of dendritic cells in women with human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cervical squamous intraepithelial lesions (SILs). In the current study the functions of dendritic cells in the development of T-cell immunity in women with cervical SILs were assessed.

Methods: The percentage of myeloid dendritic cells (MDCs) and plasmacytoid dendritic cells (PDCs) in peripheral blood were enumerated of 44 patients with SIL (low-grade, 19; high-grade, 25), 19 patients with atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS), and 18 controls.

Renal and peri-renal abscesses in children: proposed physio-pathologic mechanisms and treatment algorithm.

Renal and perinephric abscess in children are uncommon. Three basic pathophysiologic mechanisms are involved, namely, hematogenous spread, ascending infection and contamination by proximity to an infected area. Six pediatric patients diagnosed with renal abscess were treated at our institution from 1990-2000.

Waist circumference values in Spanish children--gender related differences.

Objective: To obtain reference values of the waist circumference in Spanish children, and to investigate their dependence on age and gender.

Design: Cross-sectional study.

Setting: General school-age population.

Phase II trial of 13-cis-retinoic acid plus interferon-alpha in recurrent head and neck cancer.

13-cis-retinoic acid (isotretinoin) and interferon-alpha have limited activity as single agents in advanced cancer. Preclinical data indicate that these agents have different mechanisms of action and, in combination have greater activity (that is, the ability to modulate growth and differentiation) in a number of malignant cell types than either agent alone. In clinical trials, the new biological regimen of 13-cis-retinoic acid and interferon-alpha was shown to have major activity in advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the skin and cervix.

A study of osteoporosis as it relates to metabolic manifestations in edentulous women.

Among some patients, regardless of age, the jaw loses bone mass, leading to loosening and falling out of otherwise healthy teeth. This study seeks to establish whether this bone loss is associated with the metabolic manifestations of other forms of localized decalcifications, such as in Paget's disease, or with generalized osteoporosis. Sixteen women being fitted with dental implants to compensate for bone losses provided 24-hour urine samples for the quantitative determination of calcium and galactosyl hydroxylysine, a bone collagen metabolite.

Resection of posterior ventricular aneurysm, replacement of mitral valve, and coronary bypass.

A 58-year-old man had sudden and progressive heart failure after a severe myocardial infarction. Aggressive medical treatment consisting of diuretics, vasopressors, and digitalis failed to improve his condition significantly. Cardiac catheterization disclosed a critical stenosis in the left anterior descending branch of the left coronary artery, a large posterior left ventricul aneurysm, and severe mitral insufficiency.
