Objective: To determine the frequency of Down Syndrome (DS) in Asturias and the prenatal diagnosis impact on the birth prevalence of this chromosomal anomaly.

Methods: The analysed data came from the Registry of Congenital Defects of Asturias (1990-1993) and from a retrospective study conducted by the same working group (1987-1989). The total prevalence rates and the prevalence at birth were calculated.

Alveolar echinococcosis of the liver is a disease caused by the intrahepatic growth of Echinococcus multilocularis larvae. In contrast to hydatidic cyst caused by Echinococcus granulosus, this is a rare disease in Spain. We present a case of alveolar echinococcosis of the liver which presented with jaundice and hepatomegaly.

We report a case of miliary tuberculosis following extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL*). The patient had right lower caliceal and left distal ureteral calculi on excretory urography. He was hospitalized 50 days after ESWL with fever, weight loss and night sweats.

We report a case of mucinous adenocarcinoma of the prostate gland in an 82-year-old patient who consulted for urinary discomfort. Rectal digital examination revealed a smooth tumor in the left lateral aspect. No bony metastases were observed and the prostate acid phosphatase levels were normal.

The clinical and morphological features of two patients with solitary extramedullary plasmacytomas of paranasal sinus and nasal cavity are presented. Patients only developed local symptomatology without features of multiple myeloma. They were treated with surgical excision and local radiotherapy.

The clinical, morphological, microscopic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural findings in a case of primary non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphoma of the prostate gland is reported. The presenting features were not distinct from those of nodular hyperplasia. Following biopsy, the lesion was classified as monoclonal IgM-secreting, low grade, malignant beta-lymphoma.

We have developed a new model of disseminated intravascular coagulation in rats based on the induction of immunosuppression by prolonged high-dose dexamethasone treatment. Most models of disseminated intravascular coagulation are based on the generalized Shwartzman reaction, which is observed characteristically in experimental animals after two separate inoculations of bacterial endotoxins. These produce massive deposition of thrombi in the microcirculation and significant hemorrhagic and ischemic phenomena.
