Metformin is a drug commonly used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. However, it has been associated with damaging side effects when used over a long period of time. A potential solution to this problem is the implementation of a prolonged-release system for metformin, which would enhance the efficiency of the doses administered to patients.

Background: Polymeric electrospun mats have been used as scaffolds in tissue engineering for the development of novel materials due to its characteristics. The usage of synthetic materials has gone in decline due to environmental problems associated with their synthesis and waste disposal. Biomaterials such as biopolymers have been used recently due to good compatibility on biological applications and sustainability.

In this study, the functionality of an elastomer composite material containing polypyrrole (PPy) as a stress sensor was evaluated. The material was prepared using the swelling method by diffusing the pyrrole monomer into the elastomer before polymerization. To achieve adequate diffusion, organic solvents with affinity for the elastomer were used.

Photothermal nanocomposite hydrogels are promising materials for remotely triggering drug delivery by near-infrared (NIR) radiation stimuli. In this work, a novel hydrogel based on poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(vinyl methyl ether--maleic acid), poly(vinyl methyl ether), and functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-f) was prepared by the freeze/thaw method. A comparative characterization of materials (with and without MWCNT-f) was carried out by infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, mechanical assays, swelling kinetics measurements, and photothermal analysis under NIR irradiation.

This study addresses the fabrication of extruded films using poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and chitosan, with and without maleic anhydride as a compatibilizing agent, for potential applications in disposable food packaging. These films underwent controlled conditions of UV irradiation, water condensation, and temperature variations in an accelerated weathering chamber. The investigation analyzed the effect of different exposure periods on the structural, morphological, mechanical, and thermal properties of the films.

This research outlines the fabrication of polymeric membranes and films of poly(lactic acid) (PLA), prepared electrospinning and extrusion, respectively. These materials were subsequently coated with polyaniline (PANi) by using the chemical polymerization technique. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs revealed that the best coatings were achieved when 3 and 30 min of contact time with the monomeric solution were used for the membrane and film, respectively.

The preparation method of hydrogels has a significant effect on their structural and physicochemical properties. In this report, physically and chemically cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) networks containing humic acid (HA) were alternatively prepared by autoclaving (AC) and through glutaraldehyde (GA) addition, respectively, for agricultural purposes. PVA/HA hydrogels were comparatively characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, mechanical assays, scanning electron microscopy, swelling kinetics measurements, and water retention tests in soil.

Conductive polymers, such as polypyrrole and polyaniline, have been extensively studied for their notable intrinsic electronic and ionic conductivities, rendering them suitable for a range of diverse applications. In this study, in situ chemical polymerization was employed to coat extruded PLA films with PPy and PANi. Morphological analysis reveals a uniform and compact deposition of both polyaniline and polypyrrole after polymerization periods of 3 and 1 h, respectively.

Female ejaculation is a contentious topic. From a review of the literature, history indicates that it is not a modern concept; some females were aware of it in times past without understanding the role of the fluid or composition of the ejaculate. Over time, scholars experimented, mainly with anatomical studies, in an attempt to identify the source of the ejaculate and explore its physiological and anatomical benefits for the female sexual experience.

The preparation of composites of synthetic and natural polymers represent an interesting option to combine properties; in this manner, polypropylene and chitosan extruded films using a different proportion of components and polypropylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PPgMA) as compatibilizer were prepared. The effect of the content of the biopolymer in the polypropylene (PP) matrix, the addition of compatibilizer, and the particle size on the properties of the composites was analyzed using characterization by fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), tensile strength, and contact angle, finding that in general, the addition of the compatibilizer and reducing the particle size of the chitosan, favored the physicochemical and morphological properties of the films.

The brown swimming crab (Callinectes bellicosus) is an economically important species in the Gulf of California, and its fishing activity, held in Sonora from 1986, has been affected by a 20-year declining trend in its biomass. With the aim to understand the possible reasons of this species population changes along time, we estimated population growth rate (r) and sex ratio of C. bellicosus, and combined them with three parameters describing its habitat: sea temperature, wetland extension and habitat size in four areas along the coast of Sonora.

The optimal conditions for the fibers preparation of cellulose acetate (CA) and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) containing triclosan within the fiber were successfully found; the physicochemical characteristics of these fibrous membranes were corroborated by FTIR spectroscopy, thermal analysis, mechanical tests, SEM , and TEM analysis. The formation of composite fibers of CA and PVP containing triclosan at the core of the fiber was evidenced. A comparative study of the release properties of amoxicillin, epicatechin or triclosan embedded into fibers CA/PVP/CA was performed.

The use of mixtures of synthetic and natural polymers is a potential option to reduce the pollution by plastic waste. In this work, the method for the chemical modification of chitosan with poly(lactic acid) was developed; then, the preparation of films of blends of polyethylene and chitosan-poly(lactic acid) produced by an extrusion method using polyethylene-graft maleic anhydride as a compatibilizer. It was possible to obtain films with a maximum content of 20 wt% and 30 wt%, chitosan, with and without compatibilizer, respectively.

Optimal conditions for the preparation of a composite material of fibers of cellulose acetate (CA) and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), containing epicatechin (Epic) within the fiber CA/PVP-Epic/CA, were found. The morphology and physical/chemical properties of the fibrous membranes containing CA, PVP, and epicatechin were characterized using FTIR spectroscopy, thermal analysis, SEM, TEM, and natural weathering. Also, mechanical characterization of the fibers showed that tensile strength of the membrane was not affected by the presence of epicatechin within the fiber as compared with fibers without epicatechin.

Novel films of polyethylene and chitosan were obtained using extrusion. These polymers have interesting properties, and processing them with methods that are of high use in the industry, such as the extrusion method, can have a significant effect on the potential applications of these materials. The individual materials were thermally characterized; after this, extruded films of low density polyethylene and chitosan mixtures were prepared with the addition of polyethylene-graft-maleic anhydride as a compatibilizer for the blends, and glycerol, as a plasticizer for chitosan.
