Background: The prospective association between protein intake and falls has been little studied. We assessed this association in a Spanish community-dwelling cohort.
Methods: We performed a prospective cohort study of 2464 men and women 60 years or older who were recruited in 2008-2010 and followed up through 2012.
Background: Some of the previously reported health benefits of low-to-moderate alcohol consumption may derive from health status influencing alcohol consumption rather than the opposite. We examined whether health status changes influence changes in alcohol consumption, cessation included.
Methods: Data came from 571 current drinkers aged ≥60 years participating in the Seniors-ENRICA cohort in Spain.
Objectives: To examine the separate and joint association between physical activity and frailty and long-term all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in older adults.
Design: Population-based prospective cohort study.
Setting: Cohort representative of the noninstitutionalized Spanish population.
Objective: Although there is some evidence of the association between specific food groups, such as plant foods, and subjective wellbeing, this is the first study to assess the relationship between adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern and subjective wellbeing.
Design: Data were collected in 2014-2015, within the Edad con Salud project, a follow-up study of a multistage clustered survey on a representative sample of the population of Spain. The final sample comprised 2397 individuals with ages ranging from 21 to 101 years.
Background: the association between pain characteristics and frailty risk is uncertain.
Objective: to investigate the separate impact of the frequency, intensity and location of pain on frailty risk and its possible mechanisms.
Methods: prospective cohort of 1505 individuals ≥63 years followed between 2012 and 2015 in Spain.

Purpose: To examine the separate and joint associations of physical activity and levels of physical, mental, and social health with long-term all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in older adults.
Methods: A cohort of 4008 individuals representative of the non-institutionalized population of Spain aged 60 years and older was analyzed. Information on physical activity was self-reported.
This work examines whether the increased all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality associated with polypharmacy could be offset by a healthy lifestyle. We included a prospective cohort of 3,925 individuals representative of the Spanish population aged ≥60 years, who were recruited in 2000-2001 and followed up through 2014. Polypharmacy was defined as treatment with ≥5 medications.

We prospectively examined the association between patterns of moderate alcohol consumption, depression and psychological distress, using information from 5,299 community-dwelling older adults from the ELSA and Seniors-ENRICA cohorts. A Mediterranean drinking pattern (MDP) was defined as moderate alcohol intake (<40 g/day for men; <24 g/day for women) with a preference for wine and drinking only with meals.

We assess the association between alcohol intake and all-cause death in older adults after accounting for those methodological issues.
Methods: Data came from 3045 individuals representative of the non-institutionalized population aged ≥ 60 years in Spain.
Objective: Elevated LDL cholesterol (LDLc) is not strongly associated with obesity or metabolic syndrome (MS), but this relationship repeatedly has been examined assuming a linear association. This study aimed to assess the dose-response relationship between body mass index (BMI) or waist circumference (WC) and LDLc and to evaluate its link to metabolic impairment.
Research Design And Methods: Participants in the continuous National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 1999-2010) ( = 12,383) and the Study on Nutrition and Cardiovascular Risk (ENRICA, 2008-2010) ( = 11,765), representative samples of U.
Background: The beneficial effect of nut consumption preventing cardio-metabolic diseases and cancer suggests that nuts might also protect from physical function impairment in older people since aging-related functional decline shares biological pathways with these chronic diseases. The objective was to examine the association between nut consumption and impairment of physical function in older adults.
Methods: Prospective study with 3,289 individuals aged ≥60 years from the Seniors-ENRICA cohort.
Background: the association between vitamin intake and frailty has hardly been studied. The objective was to assess the association of dietary vitamin intake with incident frailty in older adults from Spain.
Methods: data came from a cohort of 1,643 community-dwelling individuals aged ≥65, recruited in 2008-10 and followed up prospectively throughout 2012.
The aim of this study was to examine the independent and combined associations of physical activity (PA) and sitting time (ST) with long-term mortality attributed to inflammatory causes other than cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer in a national cohort of older adults in Spain. Prospective study. A cohort of 3,677 individuals (1,626 men) aged ≥60 years was followed-up during 14.

Similarly, the association between specific types of recreational physical activity (rPA) and mental health in older adults is poorly understood.
Methods: In 2012, information on SBs, rPA, and other health behaviors was collected with validated questionnaires from community-dwelling older adults participating in the Seniors-ENRICA cohort.
Information on the association between socioeconomic status (SES) throughout life and sarcopenic obesity is scarce, whereas no study has been focused on the association between SES and frail obesity. This analysis estimated the prevalence of sarcopenic obesity and frail obesity, and their associations with SES in older adults. Data were collected in 2012 from 1,765 non-institutionalized individuals aged ≥65 participating in the Seniors-ENRICA study in Spain, by using standardized techniques and equipment.

Although poor diet and limited physical functioning both seem to be particularly common in Eastern Europe, no previous study has assessed the relationship between these two factors in this region. The current analysis examined the association between overall diet quality and physical functioning in Eastern European populations.

Methods A longitudinal study of 36 children and adolescents with GD followed from 1997 to 2017 at a single tertiary hospital was performed.

Material And Methods: We performed a nationwide, population-based survey evaluating 11,505 individuals representative of the Spanish adult population.
Objective: The safety of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in oldest old patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) in daily clinical practice has not been systematically assessed. This study examined the safety of DOACs and dicumarol (a vitamin K antagonist) in NVAF geriatric patients.
Design: Prospective study from January 2010 through June 2015, with follow-up through January 2016.
Background: The aim was to examine the association between habitual consumption of dairy products and 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring among older adults with hypertension.
Methods: We conducted an analysis of 715 community-living hypertensive adults age ≥60. Habitual dairy consumption was assessed with a validated diet history.
Background: Previous research indicates that patients with type 2 diabetes are at higher risk of becoming frail. Emerging evidence also indicates that the Mediterranean diet may prevent frailty in the older population.
Objective: The aim of this study was to assess whether a Mediterranean-style diet pattern was associated with lower risk of frailty among older women with diabetes.
Background: Evidence for the influence of ambulatory blood pressure on prognosis derives mainly from population-based studies and a few relatively small clinical investigations. This study examined the associations of blood pressure measured in the clinic (clinic blood pressure) and 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in a large cohort of patients in primary care.
Methods: We analyzed data from a registry-based, multicenter, national cohort that included 63,910 adults recruited from 2004 through 2014 in Spain.
Background: Sugar-sweetened beverages and added sugars (monosaccharides and disaccharides) in the diet are associated with obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, which are all risk factors for decline in physical function among older adults.
Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the association between added sugars in the diet and incidence of frailty in older people.
Design: Data were taken from 1973 Spanish adults ≥60 y old from the Seniors-ENRICA cohort.
