There are more than 200 species and subspecies of Neotropical Primates of which more than 40% are listed as threatened by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Both in situ and ex situ conservation programs can benefit from the use of assisted reproductive technologies. The objective of this study was to evaluate, for the first time, cryopreservation techniques for Alouatta caraya semen.

Complete blood counts (n=566) and serum biochemistry (n=426) were assessed in seven coastal seabirds species that underwent rehabilitation along the southeastern and southern coast of Brazil from Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro State (22°56'16.44″S, 42°18'24.16″W) to Laguna, Santa Catarina State (28°29'43″S, 48°45'39.

Mycoplasma spp. are wall-less bacteria able to infect mammals and are classified as hemotropic (hemoplasma) and nonhemotropic. In aquatic mammals, hemoplasma have been reported in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) and river dolphins (Inia spp.

A female juvenile green turtle (Chelonia mydas), found alive in Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was weak, dehydrated and cachectic, with a healed fracture in the caudal portion of the carapace. Despite supportive treatment, the animal died after 9 days. At necropsy the main lesions were pallor of visceral organs, arthritis and deposits of whitish granular material in the wall of large arteries and the trachea.

Article Synopsis
  • - River dolphins, which include the Amazon and Bolivian species, are a threatened group of cetaceans, and a study was conducted to investigate the presence of herpesviruses in their populations.
  • - The survey found herpesvirus DNA in 59.1% of Bolivian river dolphins and 51.9% of franciscana dolphins, while all Amazon river dolphins tested negative for herpesviruses.
  • - Two different types of herpesviruses were identified in the Bolivian river dolphins, including a novel strain, and a new gammaherpesvirus was discovered in franciscana samples, suggesting a complex evolutionary history between viruses and their hosts.

The excellent adaptability of Callithrix jacchus to life in captivity presents advantages in comparison to other nonhuman primates that are used in experimental models for biomedical research, which explains the increasing scientific interest in investigating the anatomical characteristics of this species. Owing to the relative scarcity of publications on the descriptive morphology of the heart of C. jacchus, the aim of this study was to quantify the presence of collagen in the left and right ventricular myocardium using modified picrosirius red and acid fuchsine colorimetric assays.

Article Synopsis
  • Wild animal genetic resource banking (GRB) is crucial for conservation programs focusing on endangered species, like the golden-headed lion tamarin.
  • The study evaluated two sperm freezing extenders, BotuBOV® and Test Yolk Buffer®, on samples collected from these tamarins, measuring various sperm qualities post-thawing.
  • While one extender showed slightly better results in acrosome integrity and oxidative stress resistance, both methods achieved good levels of sperm motility and viability, suggesting promise for short-term conservation efforts.

Background: The southern muriqui (Brachyteles arachnoides) is an endangered Neotropical primate. Semen collection and description of its traits, as well as testicular morphometry, have never been reported for this species.

Methods: Testicles from five healthy adult captive southern muriqui were measured, and semen was collected by rectal probe electrostimulation (RPE).

Background: Congenital fused labia (CFL) is defined as a failure or significant delay in the opening of the juvenile sealed labia majora. This phenotype is known to be variably common in adult captive female marmosets but has never been investigated in detail before.

Materials And Methods: Here, we define, describe and quantify the variations in the degree of closure of the vulva in 122 captive marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) from 1.

Background: The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is one of the most studied Neotropical primates regarding reproduction. However, little has been reported on the black-tufted-ear marmoset (Callithrix penicillata), which may produce fertile hybrids with other Callithrix. This is the first study to evaluate sperm freezing from black-tufted-ear marmoset.

Research on Neotropical primates' reproduction is necessary due to the lack of available information and the increasing threat to these species. Callimico goeldii is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This study aimed to test rectal electrostimulation for semen collection and evaluate seminal characteristics.

Background: The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is of interest for reproductive studies because of their high and variable fertility in captivity. However, to understand this variability, much basic information still needs to be gathered. This study is the first to characterize marmoset semen comparing a German and a Brazilian colony.

Article Synopsis
  • * All monkeys tested negative for Brucella spp. and Leptospira spp., while 75% of Alouatta caraya and 16.6% of Callithrix penicillata showed positive results for T. gondii.
  • * The study highlights important implications for the conservation and health management of these monkey populations.

Background: The studies on fecal steroid metabolites published with free-living primates are limited mainly by the difficulty in obtaining samples.

Methods: A radioimmunoassay was used to measure the fecal steroid concentrations in Alouatta belzebul in the National Forest of Tapirape-Aquiri in Brazil.

Results And Conclusions: Androgens were significantly higher for the adult males from the Area of Influence (AI-I group) when compared to those from the Control Area (CA group) (P < 0.
