Influence of Test Method on the Determination of Tensile Strength Perpendicular to Grain of Timber for Civil Construction.

Tensile perpendicular to grain is an important mechanical property in the design of joints in timber structures. However, according to the standards, this strength can be determined using at least two different methods: uniaxial tensile and three-point static bending. In this context, the present paper aims to investigate the influence of these test methods on the determination of tensile strength perpendicular to grain of wood used in civil construction timber.

The Design Space of the Auditory Representation of Objects and Their Behaviours in Virtual Reality for Blind People.

As virtual reality (VR) is typically designed in terms of visual experience, it poses major challenges for blind people to understand and interact with the environment. To address this, we propose a design space to explore how to augment objects and their behaviours in VR with a nonvisual audio representation. It intends to support designers in creating accessible experiences by explicitly considering alternative representations to visual feedback.

Rapidly deploying a COVID-19 decision support system in one of the largest Brazilian hospitals.

The COVID-19 pandemic generated research interest in automated models to perform classification and segmentation from medical imaging of COVID-19 patients, However, applications in real-world scenarios are still needed. We describe the development and deployment of COVID-19 decision support and segmentation system. A partnership with a Brazilian radiologist consortium, gave us access to 1000s of labeled computed tomography (CT) and X-ray images from São Paulo Hospitals.

This study evaluated the impact of a systematic protocol with nasal endoscopy and biopsies to early detect AIFRS in immunocompromised patients. Additionally, we compared the accuracy of frozen-section biopsy and culture with formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) biopsy.

Effect of epigallocatechin-3- gallate solutions on bond durability at the adhesive interface in caries-affected dentin.

Hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) reduces the durability of composite resin restorations on caries-affected dentin (CAD). The use of MMP inhibitors such as epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) could increase the longevity of the bond to dentin. This study aimed to evaluate the use of EGCG at different aqueous concentrations on the resin-dentin microtensile bond strength (μTBS), fracture pattern and nanoleakage (NL) in immediate (IM) time interval and after 12-months of water storage (1Y) when using a two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive system on CAD.

Evaluation and Comparison of Wound Healing Properties of an Ointment (AlpaWash) Containing Brazilian Micronized Propolis and Peucedanum ostruthium Leaf Extract in Skin Ulcer in Rats.

Several previous studies have demonstrated improved wound healing associated with natural-based formulations. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of a topical formulation containing both a Brazilian micronized propolis extract and a Peucedanum ostruthium leaf extract for the treatment of wounds created by surgical punch in rats. The study was conducted for 14 days and animals were treated as follows: gauze group (G), polyethylene glycol base ointment (Control), AlpaWash (an ointment containing a Brazilian micronized propolis extract and Peucedanum ostruthium leaf extract [Treatment]), and polysporin (one of the most commonly used topical antibiotic ointments, based on bacitracin zinc and polymyxin B sulfate [Reference Standard]).

Reproducibility of the Lauge-Hansen, Danis-Weber, and AO classifications for ankle fractures.

Objective: This study evaluated the reproducibility of the three main classifications of ankle fractures most commonly used in emergency clinical practice: Lauge-Hansen, Danis-Weber, and AO-OTA. The secondary objective was to assess whether the level of professional experience influenced the interobserver agreement for the classification of this pathology.

Methods: The study included 83 digitized preoperative radiographic images of ankle fractures, in anteroposterior and lateral views, of different adults that had occurred between January and December 2013.

The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate the carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) values in healthy dogs using pulse wave Doppler ultrasound. A secondary aim was to determine the feasibility of this method and to report the intra- and interobserver reproducibilities of the PWV in conscious dogs. The data were studied in 30 healthy, adult, male (n = 15) and female (n = 15) dogs.

Hard-capsule compounding plays an essential role in drug delivery for pharmaceutical application. Versatile and easy to use, capsules represent a popular dosage form for patients. Nevertheless, bioavailability of the drugs compounded in hard capsules is not always optimized and choosing the appropriate excipients is a key factor to improve the dissolution kinetics of active pharmaceutical ingredients.

Nucleotide and phylogenetic analysis of human papillomavirus types 6 and 11 isolated from recurrent respiratory papillomatosis in Brazil.

There are few studies about the distribution of natural molecular variants of low-risk HPVs. Our aim was to evaluate the E6 early gene variability among HPV-6 and HPV-11 isolates detected in recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) samples obtained in a cohort of Brazilian patients. We also performed a phylogenetic analysis in order to compare nucleotide sequences identified in our study with previously reported isolates from different anatomic sites (laryngeal papillomas, genital warts, cervical cancer and anal swabs) obtained from other parts of the world to determine the phylogenetic relationships of variants detected in Brazil.

Alterations in the large peripheral circulation in dogs with heart failure.

The femoral artery is responsible for perfusion of a large muscular region that can be involved in the exercise intolerance shown by dogs with spontaneous heart failure. The objective of the present study was to evaluate blood flow in the femoral artery by transcutaneous duplex Doppler ultrasonography (TDU) in 50 healthy dogs and 50 dogs with spontaneous heart failure. The group of dogs with heart disease was divided according to the functional class of the heart failure.

Evaluation of aging on muscle blood flow in conscious healthy dogs by duplex Doppler ultrasonography.

During the last decades, a common scenario has been the increase on life expectancy of dogs. The exact relationship between the negative modifications of cardiovascular function and the development of specific cardiovascular diseases is difficult to ascertain, and also, the effect of age per se on vascular impedance is important.

The resistance to fluconazole in patients with esophageal candidiasis.

Context: Esophageal candidiasis is often observed in patients with risk factors for its development and fluconazole is the therapeutic choice for the treatment of this disease.

Objectives: To determine its frequency, by performing upper digestive endoscopy; to determine Candida species involved in its pathogenesis and verify their distribution according with the predisposing factors and to determine susceptibility to fluconazole in the samples.

Methods: From March 2006 to April 2007, all patients submitted to esophagogastroduodenoscopy at the Digestive Endoscopy Unit in the Oswaldo Cruz University Hospital, Recife, PE, Brazil, were eligible for the study.

Evaluation of cardiac rhythm in dogs treated with levamisole hydrochloride using 24-hour ambulatory electrocardiography.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the electrocardiographic alterations in the cardiac rhythm in dogs treated with levamisole hydrochloride over a period of 24 hours. Thirty-six mixed-breed dogs, both male and female, all clinically healthy, were used in the experiment. The dogs were divided into 6 groups with 6 dogs in each group, according to dosage and route of administration.
