Introduction: Prostate needle biopsy (PNBx) is essential for prostate cancer diagnosis, yet it is not without risks. We sought to assess patients who underwent PNBx using a claims-based frailty index to study the association between frailty and postbiopsy complications from a large population-based cohort. We hypothesized that increased frailty would be associated with adverse outcomes.

Introduction: The preparation of medical students for internship during medical school is variable, which can negatively affect the performance and confidence of new urology residents year 1. The primary objective is to assess the need for a workshop/curriculum to prepare medical students transitioning to urology residency. Background: Pelvic fracture urethral injury (PFUI) occurs in up to 10% of pelvic fractures. Background: To describe our experience with outpatient transperineal biopsy (TPB) without antibiotics compared to transrectal biopsy (TRB) with antibiotics and bowel preparation. The literature elicits comparable cancer detection, time, and cost between the two. As antibiotic resistance increases, antimicrobial stewardship is imperative.

Primary carcinoid tumor of the bladder.

Transitional cell carcinoma is the most common type of bladder cancer in the United States. This case report discusses the finding of primary bladder carcinoid tumor (also called well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor) in a woman with gross hematuria. With only 15-20 reported cases, primary bladder carcinoid is rare and the approach to treatment is unclear.

Is a safety guidewire needed for retrograde ureteroscopy?

Introduction: It is generally advised to have a safety guidewire (SGW) present during ureteroscopy (URS) to manage possible complications. However, it increases the strenght needed to insert and retract the endoscope during the procedure, and, currently, there is a lack of solid data supporting the need for SGW in all procedures. We reviewed the literature about SGW utilization during URS.

Laparoscopic Versus Percutaneous Cryoablation of Small Renal Mass: Systematic Review and Cumulative Analysis of Comparative Studies.

The objective of this study was to compare the surgical, oncological, and functional outcomes of laparoscopic and percutaneous cryoablation for the treatment of small renal masses. A systematic review of the literature was performed through March 2016 using PubMed, Scopus, and Ovid databases. Article selection proceeded according to the search strategy on the basis of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses criteria.

A new patient safety smartphone application for prevention of "forgotten" ureteral stents: results from a clinical pilot study in 194 patients.

Background: Approximately 12% of all ureteral stents placed are retained or "forgotten." Forgotten stents are associated with significant safety concerns as well as increased costs and legal issues. Retained ureteral stents (RUS) often occur due to lack of clinical follow-up, communication or language barriers, and economic concerns.

Subcapsular hematoma after ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy.

Subcapsular hematoma is an uncommon complication after ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy. We report on a 38-year-old male with an 8 mm lower pole stone who underwent a left ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy. The stone was successfully fragmented.

Bipolar energy in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia: a current systematic review of the literature.

Introduction: For decades, the monopolar transurethral resection of the prostate has been established as the minimally invasive surgical treatment for patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). In recent years, new technologies and devices emerged to reduce the morbidity and improve outcomes for this treatment approach. Bipolar energy introduced the use of saline irrigation and laser technology increased the urological armamentarium to treat BPH.

Current issues in patient safety in surgery: a review.

Current surgical safety guidelines and checklists are generic and are not specifically tailored to address patient issues and risk factors in surgical subspecialties. Patient safety in surgical subspecialties should be templated on general patient safety guidelines from other areas of medicine and mental health but include and develop specific processes dedicated for the care of the surgical patients. Safety redundant systems must be in place to decrease errors in surgery.

Significance of surgical plume obstruction during laparoscopy.

With the advent of laparoscopic surgery, the need of optimal visualization and efficient instrumentation has created a need for better understanding of the characteristics of the surgical plume. Despite the technological advances of digital imaging and dissector technology (ultrasonic, radiofrequency electrical, and bipolar), the inconvenient and sometimes harmful generation of a surgical plume decreases visualization, often requiring the surgeon to remove the scope from the surgical field and remove the obstructing particles. If visualization is suboptimal or lost during bleeding, the outcome can be deadly.
