is a flesh fly associated with pig and rat carcasses. This study aims to describe the life cycle at two temperatures (27 ± 1 °C and 29 ± 1 °C) and analyze the morphological characteristics of the eggs, larvae, and puparia of using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Temperature is an abiotic factor that greatly influences the development of insects.

Objective: To examine the associations between self-reported screen time and symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression in adolescents.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 982 adolescents aged between 12 and 15 years, enrolled in public schools in Jacarezinho (PR), Brazil. Screen time was assessed by the question "Considering a typical day, how much time do you spend watching TV, playing videogame, using computer or smartphone?" The DASS-21 questionnaire (short form) was used to assess symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress.

Introduction: Farnesol, derived from farnesyl pyrophosphate in the sterols biosynthetic pathway, is a molecule with three unsaturations and four possible isomers. predominantly secretes the , -farnesol (, -FOH) isomer, known for its role in regulating the virulence of various fungi species and modulating morphological transition processes. Notably, the evolutionary divergence in sterol biosynthesis between fungi, including , and trypanosomatids resulted in the synthesis of sterols with the ergostane skeleton, distinct from cholesterol.

Background: The management of acute respiratory failure during pregnancy is a poorly defined issue in the literature, especially regarding the use of the prone position and the appropriate time for delivery. This study describes our experience in treating pregnant and postpartum women with severe or critical coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Materials And Methods: This descriptive retrospective study included 25 pregnant and 4 postpartum women admitted to an ICU due to respiratory complications from COVID-19 from June 2020 to August 2021.

The Amazonian region is composed by many kinds of environments, including the Amazonian savannas, which comprise about 5% of the Amazon biome in Brazil. The biota of Amazonian savannas is poorly known, especially for insects. In this study, we performed a faunistic inventory of flesh flies (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) of four Brazilian Amazon savannas, where we recorded two subfamilies, 16 genera, and 40 species, two of which are described as new to science: Lepidodexia (Notochaeta) helenae sp.

Objectives: To assess the improvement on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of individuals with cervical dentin hypersensitivity (CDH) with the noncarious cervical lesion (NCCLs) subjected to different treatments.

Material And Methods: A single-blind randomized clinical trial was conducted with patients (n = 74) randomly allocated into three groups according to the treatment performed: PO, potassium oxalate (Oxa-Gel BF); LL, low-power laser irradiation; and POLL, potassium oxalate (Oxa-Gel BF) associated with low-power laser irradiation. The treatments were applied in four steps, weekly.

Nitrogen fertilization has been recognized as an essential tool towards the establishment of sustainable intensification of pasture-based livestock systems using tropical perennial grasses if, for a given ecosystem it is capable of increasing forage growth, stocking rates and animal performance. This study assessed pasture growth traits, nutritive value, animal and economic responses of Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça guinea grass pastures subjected to different levels of N fertilization (100 (N100), 200 (N200), and 300 (N300) kg N ha yr).

Neobenedenia melleni, a marine fish ectoparasite, is responsible for considerable losses in the mariculture industry. In maintaining the parasite's homeostasis, sterols are structural and functional lipids that perform vital functions. Thus, understanding the mechanisms of biosynthesis and the uptake of sterols can reveal potential pharmacological targets.

The photocatalytic discoloration of industrial dyes, Novacron blue (NB) and Novacron yellow (NY), was investigated using composites based on TiO and natural palygorskite (Pal-Ti10 and Pal-Ti30). The method consisted of synthesizing the composites starting from a physical mixture of TiO and natural palygorskite in the presence of alcohol, for impregnation through calcination under conditions of temperature equal to 450 °C and atmospheric air. The characterization techniques used in this work were FTIR, XRD, XRF, SEM, particle size analysis and zeta potential.

Antimicrobial-resistant bacteria were isolated from muscoid dipterans collected at five different areas of Rio de Janeiro city, in proximity to hospitals. Extracts obtained by maceration of flies were diluted and used as inocula for different culture media, with or without antibiotic (ceftriaxone 1 mg/L) supplementation. Purified isolates were submitted to antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST).

Background: In the last decade, the number of cardiac electronic devices has risen considerably and consequently the occasional need for their removal. Concurrently, the transvenous lead removal became a safe procedure that could prevent open-heart surgery.

Objective: The primary objective of this study was to describe the successful performance and the complication rates of pacemaker removals in a Brazilian public hospital.

With omics data being generated at an unprecedented rate, genome-scale modelling has become pivotal in its organisation and analysis. However, machine learning methods have been gaining ground in cases where knowledge is insufficient to represent the mechanisms underlying such data or as a means for data curation prior to attempting mechanistic modelling. We discuss the latest advances in genome-scale modelling and the development of optimisation algorithms for network and error reduction, intracellular constraining and applications to strain design.

Sesamoiditis secondary to gout is an extremely rare condition with few case reports in the literature. It is an important differential diagnosis because the treatment depends on targeted therapy, unlike the main causes of sesamoiditis that often involves immobilization with special orthoses and prescription of anti-inflammatory drugs. We report here a case of a 38-year-old male, athlete, with bipartite medial sesamoid, who had insidious pain in the base of the left hallux.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how effective different treatments are for cervical dentin hypersensitivity (CDH) in patients with non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs).
  • A total of 74 participants were divided into three groups: those using potassium oxalate, those treated with a low-power laser, and those receiving a combination of both treatments, with sensitivity measured over three weeks using specific tests.
  • Results showed that potassium oxalate was particularly effective for immediate relief of CDH, but after multiple treatments, all methods resulted in similar levels of improvement.

Background: Cerebral thromboembolism is a potentially devastating complication of atrial fibrillation (AF) and atrial flutter (AFl). The use of transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) before electrophysiological procedures in anticoagulated patients is variable. Our objective was to determine the incidence and identify predictors of intracardiac left atrial appendage (LAA) thrombus on TEE in patients with AF/AFl before electrical cardioversion or ablation.

Chronic Chagas heart disease has different clinical manifestations including arrhythmias, heart failure, and stroke. Chest pain is one of the most common symptoms and when associated with changes in the electrocardiogram, such as T-wave changes, electrically inactive areas, and segmental wall motion abnormalities, may lead to a misdiagnosis of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Here, we describe two patients with Chagas heart disease and syncope due to sustained ventricular tachycardia who were misdiagnosed with ACS, and discuss the role of novel imaging modalities in the differential diagnosis and risk stratification.

A 43-year-old man presented after ventricular fibrillation cardiac arrest with evidence of pre-excited atrial fibrillation. Electrophysiology study with guideline-directed testing demonstrated a low risk accessory pathway effective refractory period, which became high-risk with isoproterenol infusion. This case represents a challenging scenario wherein a high-risk pathway may be misclassified using the currently indicated methods of risk stratification.
