The use of effect biomarkers has contributed to the understanding of the sublethal effects of contaminants on different organisms. However, the analysis of genotoxic markers as an indicator of organism and environmental health in sharks is underexplored. Thus, the present study investigated the relationship between the genomic damage frequency in erythrocytes and metal(loid) concentrations in whole blood of three shark species (Galeocerdo cuvier, Negaprion brevirostris and Ginglymostoma cirratum), taking into account climatic seasonality.

Article Synopsis
  • The greenback parrotfish, Scarus trispinosus, is the largest herbivorous fish in the Southwestern Atlantic and has been listed as endangered due to overexploitation.
  • This study aimed to assess the genetic structure of its populations along a 2000 km stretch of the NE Brazilian coast, using specific primers tested from a related species.
  • Results indicated higher genetic diversity in two areas near the Abrolhos Bank, while broader genetic homogeneity was observed across the region; however, subtle genetic differences were found when locations were grouped by latitude, suggesting a complex interaction of local admixture and larval dispersal.

, a small euryhaline guppy is reported at the Maceió River micro-basin in the Fernando de Noronha oceanic archipelago, northeast Brazil. However, the origin (human-mediated or natural dispersal) of this insular population is still controversial. The present study investigates how this population is phylogenetically related to the surrounding continental populations using the cytochrome oxidase I mitochondrial gene from eleven river basins in South America.

Prion diseases are neurodegenerative fatal disorders that affect human and non-human mammals. Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a prion disease of cervids regarded as a public health problem in North America, and polymorphisms at specific codons in the PRNP gene are associated with this disease. To assess the potential CWD susceptibility of South American free-ranging deer, the presence of these polymorphisms was examined in Mazama gouazoubira, Ozotoceros bezoarticus and Blastocerus dichotomus.

Article Synopsis
  • - Carangidae, a diverse family of marine fish, typically exhibits a stable chromosome count of 48 acrocentric chromosomes, leading to the belief that this is the ancestral karyotype for the group.
  • - Research using phylogenetic methods confirmed that the 2n = 48 chromosome count is likely ancestral for Carangidae, but basal lineages show highly variable numbers of fundamental numbers (FNs) indicating differing evolutionary paths.
  • - Findings suggest a trend of reduced genome size associated with an increase in acrocentric chromosome numbers, challenging the notion that the 2n = 48 karyotype is the ancestral state for all marine fishes, highlighting the need for careful interpretation in evolutionary studies. *

Article Synopsis
  • - HPV infection is a major cause of cervical cancer, and its oncogenic proteins can lead to chromosomal instability, which is a key factor in cancer development.
  • - The micronucleus test is a method used to detect genetic changes during cell division, allowing for early identification of DNA damage in individuals at higher cancer risk.
  • - The study found significant differences in micronucleus counts between HPV patients and healthy subjects, indicating a strong link between micronucleus expression, the severity of uterine lesions, and viral load.
