The surgical treatment of ventral spinal canal compression has traditionally required either an anterior or combined anterior-posterior decompression and stabilization. These types of approaches carry a significant morbidity and may not be appropriate for all patients. We report our experience with multi-level corpectomies and reconstruction performed via a single, posterolateral approach.

Recent studies have demonstrated excellent results in treating isthmic spondylolisthesis via an anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF). The authors describe 3 patients with isthmic spondylolisthesis at L5-S1 who experienced sacral fractures after insertion of a unique, stand-alone anterior interbody fixation device. Three consecutive patients at a single institution were treated for Grade I spondylolisthesis at L5-S1 via a standalone ALIF with insertion of a novel biomechanical interbody device.

There is interest in using mature fine tailings (MFT) in reclamation strategies of oil sands mining operations. However, simulated runoff from different dried MFT treatments is known to have elevated levels of salts, toxic ions, and naphthenic acids, and alkaline pH and it is phytotoxic to the emergent macrophyte, common reed (Phragmites australis). Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) of the acidic species in the runoff confirmed that the distribution of oil sands naphthenic acids and associated oil sand acids was dependent on the MFT treatment.

Hypoxia inducible factors (HIFs) are transcription factors that mediate physiological responses to hypoxia. Hypoxia is established as the major inducer of HIFs, but stimuli such as transition metals and hormones also induce HIF target genes. Whilst the ovarian granulosa cell layer is known to be avascular and the follicle is vascularised via the thecal cell layer, little is known about the role of hypoxia or HIFs in regulating ovarian function.

Anakin Skywalker, one of the main characters in the "Star Wars" films, meets the criteria for borderline personality disorder (BPD). This finding is interesting for it may partly explain the commercial success of these movies among adolescents and be useful in educating the general public and medical students about BPD symptoms.

Ovarian cancer metastasis is characterized by the shedding of malignant cells from the surface of the ovary and their implantation onto the peritoneal surface, which lines the abdominal cavity. As the factors promoting this process are poorly understood, we investigated the ovarian cancer-peritoneal interaction by means of in vitro coculture experiments with ovarian cancer (OVCAR-5 and SKOV-3) and peritoneal (LP-9) cells. One of the proteins differentially expressed in the coculture secretome was identified by MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometry as the extracellular matrix protein transforming growth factor-beta-induced protein (TGFBIp, also known as βig-H3).

An ambient ionization/desorption technique, namely, easy ambient sonic-spray ionization mass spectrometry (EASI), has been applied to crude oil samples. From a single droplet of the sample placed on an inert surface, EASI(+/-) is shown to promote efficient desorption and ionization of a myriad of polar components via the action of its cloud of very minute supersonic bipolar charged droplets. The gaseous [M + H](+) and [M - H](-) ions concurrently formed by EASI(+/-) were analyzed by Fourier transform mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), and a total of approximately 6000 acidic and basic components have been attributed.

This study aimed to explore the role of depression as a moderator of sociocultural influences on eating disorder symptoms. A sample of 509 adolescents (56% female) completed self-report questionnaires assessing depression, body dissatisfaction, drive for thinness, bulimic symptoms and sociocultural influences on appearance from family, peers and the media. Both girls and boys displaying high levels of depressive symptoms perceived stronger media and peer influences on appearance.

The history of anti-obesity drug development is far from glorious, with transient magic bullets and only a handful of agents currently licensed for clinical use. In view of recent progress in our understanding of the multiplicity of signalling pathways involved in appetite regulation, and the resultant deluge of reports on the anorectic efficacy of novel therapies, it seems timely to stress the need to differentiate treatments that suppress intake by primary means from those that only indirectly achieve this endpoint. The current article reviews the conceptual history of the behavioural satiety sequence (BSS), also known as the behavioural sequence of satiety, post-ingestive satiety, and the postprandial satiety sequence.

During the growth of bovine follicles, one emerges from a wave as the largest and dominant follicle. What regulates dominance is not known but candidates include oestradiol, transforming growth factor beta beta1 (TGFB1), and recently CYP11AI (cholesterol side-chain cleavage) and focal intra-epithelial matrix (focimatrix). To examine this, pairs of bovine ovaries with 2 or more follicles of equal size (>5mm) and hence in a wave before deviation, were collected at an abattoir (6.

The formation of the follicular antrum and follicular fluid has received scant attention from researchers, yet both are important processes in follicular development. The central hypothesis on follicular fluid formation suggests that production by granulosa cells of hyaluronan and the chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan versican generates an osmotic gradient. This gradient draws in fluid derived from the thecal vasculature.

In the mammalian ovary there is considerable and continuous remodelling of tissue during both fetal and adult life, necessitating changes in extracellular matrix. Matrix is a diverse group of molecules varying in its composition and roles, which include regulation of growth factor activity and cell behaviour. Here we discuss four topical aspects of matrices in ovaries.

Despite the mouse being an important laboratory species, little is known about changes in its extracellular matrix (ECM) during follicle and corpora lutea formation and regression. Follicle development was induced in mice (29 days of age/experimental day 0) by injections of pregnant mare's serum gonadotrophin on days 0 and 1 and ovulation was induced by injection of human chorionic gonadotrophin on day 2. Ovaries were collected for immunohistochemistry (n=10 per group) on days 0, 2 and 5.

In view of its potential advantages, drug polytherapy is currently attracting significant interest in the field of obesity research. In this context, concurrent manipulation of serotonergic and cannabinoid pathways in rodents has been found to reduce food and fluid intake in both an additive or synergistic manner. To further assess the value of this polytherapeutic approach, the current study examined the acute effects of low-dose combinations of the cannabinoid CB1 receptor antagonist/inverse agonist rimonabant (0.

Here, complementary ion mobility/mass spectrometry (IM/MS) and ultrahigh-resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) MS analyses of light, medium, and heavy petroleum crude oils yielded distributions of the heteroatom-containing hydrocarbons, as well as multiple conformational classes. The IM/MS technique provides unique fingerprints for fast identification of signature conformational/compositional patterns, whereas FTICR MS analysis provides comprehensive heteroatom class distributions. IM/MS and FTICR MS results reveal an increase in compositional complexity in proceeding from light to medium to heavy crude oils.

Follicle classification is an important aid to the understanding of follicular development and atresia. Some bovine primordial follicles have the classical primordial shape, but ellipsoidal shaped follicles with some cuboidal granulosa cells at the poles are far more common. Preantral follicles have one of two basal lamina phenotypes, either a single aligned layer or one with additional layers.

Several studies have demonstrated an association between polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and the dinucleotide repeat microsatellite marker D19S884, which is located in intron 55 of the fibrillin-3 (FBN3) gene. Fibrillins, including FBN1 and 2, interact with latent transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta-binding proteins (LTBP) and thereby control the bioactivity of TGFbetas. TGFbetas stimulate fibroblast replication and collagen production.
