Among polar bears (), only parturient females den for extended periods, emerging from maternal dens in spring after having substantially depleted their energy reserves during a fast that can exceed 8 months. Although den emergence coincides with a period of increasing prey availability, polar bears typically do not depart immediately to hunt, but instead remain at the den for up to a month. This delay suggests that there are likely adaptive advantages to remaining at the den between emergence and departure, but the influence of the timing and duration of this post-emergence period on cub survival has not been evaluated previously.

Here we examine how exposure to blue (peaking at λ=470 nm), green (peaking at λ=505 nm) and red (peaking at λ=630 nm) light affects subsequent working memory performance measured with visual N-back tasks and associated functional brain responses in participants with extreme morning and extreme evening chronotype. We used within-subjects experimental manipulation on carefully selected samples and state of the art equipment for light exposure. The results show no differences between extreme morning-type and evening-type individuals in N-back task performance.

The facile synthesis of aminoallenes, accomplished by a selenium-π-acid-catalyzed cross-coupling of an -fluorinated sulfonimide with simple, non-activated alkynes, is reported. Until now, aminoallenes were difficult to be accessed by customary means, inasmuch as pre-activated and, in part, intricate starting materials were necessary for their synthesis. In sharp contrast, the current study shows that ordinary internal alkynes can serve as simple and readily available precursors for the construction of the aminoallene motif.
