The nearly complete 18S rRNA sequence of the myxozoan parasite Sphaerospora truttae shows an extraordinary length (2,552bp) in comparison with other myxozoans and with metazoans in general (average 1,800-1,900bp). The sequence shows nucleotide insertions in most variable regions of the 18S rRNA (V2, V4, V5 and V7), with especially large expansion segments in V4 and V7.
