Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and time to diagnosis (TTD) in childhood cancer, noting that a clearer connection has been observed in adults.
  • A retrospective analysis involving 854 children revealed a median TTD of 28 days, with variations based on tumor type but no significant link between SES factors and TTD.
  • Initial treatment by non-specialized professionals was associated with longer TTD, while overall, TTD did not appear to influence children's survival or relapse rates, indicating a need for further research on individual SES impacts.

Introduction: Total nephrectomies for the treatment of Wilms' tumor (WT) are more and more performed by laparoscopy, although indications for this approach following the UMBRELLA guidelines are currently very restrictive. The purpose of this study was to assess the compliance to the criteria of the UMBRELLA protocol for minimally invasive approach of WT.

Methods: This retrospective multicenter study included children operated on by laparoscopic total nephrectomy for suspected WT before 2020.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to clarify the dermatological features of Costello syndrome (CS) and distinguish them from other similar syndromes like cardiofaciocutaneous syndrome (CFCS) and types of Noonan syndrome (NS).
  • A ten-year multi-center study involving 31 patients found common skin and hair anomalies in CS, such as excessive eyebrows and various types of skin growths, which can help differentiate CS from CFCS and NS.
  • The findings propose multiple melanocytic naevi as a potential marker for a milder form of CS and suggest that acitretin could be beneficial for treating certain skin conditions, although no clear genotype-phenotype link was identified.

Article Synopsis
  • About 5% of Wilms tumors involve vascular extension, requiring a complex surgical approach that influences management but not prognosis.
  • A study of 69 pediatric patients with Wilms tumors revealed significant findings, including a 37.5% rate of right atrial extension and complications like pulmonary embolism.
  • Despite challenges, the use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy led to a high overall survival rate of 89%, though postoperative renal insufficiency was identified as a risk factor for reduced survival.

Unlabelled: The purpose of this study is to assess quality of life (QoL) after laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery (LARS) in children with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and to evaluate GERD symptoms and their impact on daily life and school. From June 2016 to June 2019, all children with GERD from 2 to 16 years of age, without neurologic impairment or malformation-related reflux, were prospectively included in a monocentric study. Patients (or their parents according to the age of the child) answered the Pediatric Questionnaire on Gastroesophageal Symptoms and QoL (PGSQ) before surgery and 3 and 12 months after surgery.

Background: Ovarian mature teratoma (OMT) is a common ovarian tumor found in the pediatric population. In 10%-20% of cases, OMT occurs as multiple synchronous or metachronous lesions on ipsi- or contralateral ovaries. Ovarian-sparing surgery (OSS) is recommended to preserve fertility, but total oophorectomy (TO) is still performed.

Many publications make use of opportunistic data, such as citizen science observation data, to infer large-scale properties of species' distributions. However, the few publications that use opportunistic citizen science data to study animal ecology at a habitat level do so without accounting for spatial biases in opportunistic records or using methods that are difficult to generalize. In this study, we explore the biases that exist in opportunistic observations and suggest an approach to correct for them.

Objective: Evaluate injury patterns from wheeled recreational devices (WRD) in the public space and explore risk factors for hospital admission.

Method: A cross-sectional analysis of WRD injury prevalence and risk factors for hospital admissions was conducted using data from the Queensland Injury Surveillance Unit (QISU) database for 2007 to 2017. Descriptive statistics and a log-binomial regression model were used to calculate adjusted relative risk for hospital admission.

A critical question in the conservation of large mammals in the Anthropocene is to know the extent to which they can tolerate human disturbance. Surprisingly, little quantitative data is available about large-scale effects of human activity and land use on their broad scale distribution in Europe. In this study, we quantify the relative importance of human land use and protected areas as opposed to biophysical constraints on large mammal distribution.

Purpose: The most common protocols in the initial diagnostic of acute ischemic stroke do not assess cardiogenic or aortic causes of embolism. These are usually evaluated later by transthoracic (TTE) or transesophageal (TEE) echocardiography. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of a diagnostic tool for thoracic cardiovascular thrombi according to the first experience with a new extended cardio-stroke protocol (Big 5-Jena eCS protocol) in acute stroke patients.

Purpose: Neuroblastoma management in children is multimodal and depends on multiple factors, including the possibility of complete surgical resection. Image-defined risk factors (IDRFs) are used to assess the feasibility of primary surgery. We studied the changes in IDRFs after neoadjuvant chemotherapy for thoracic neurogenic tumors.

The primary aim of this study was to determine which health care barriers were most important for people with disabilities in Malawi. To accomplish this, we devised a sequential mixed-methods research design that integrated locational survey data and qualitative data from field studies. Our secondary aim was to evaluate this research design not only as a design-solution to our particular research objective, but as a tool with more general applicability within social sciences.

Driving is a complex task that requires both the ability to rapidly identify potential hazards and respond appropriately to driving situations to avoid crashing. A great deal of research has sought to increase road safety by focusing on risky behaviours, very few of which have explored the effects of chronic pain (CP) on driving behaviour. This systematic review aimed to assess driving behaviour and motor vehicle crash risk in drivers with CP.

Children are more vulnerable to environmental exposures determinant of respiratory diseases due to their dynamic developmental physiology. Whereas social determinants of health are also associated with a higher risk of these diseases in children exposed to environmental risk factors, most studies incorporate them as covariates in the statistical analysis rather than focusing on specific vulnerable populations. In this study a systematic review searched and selected studies of respiratory diseases in children with socioeconomic disadvantage to identify the environmental risk factors associated with these diseases.
