Cutaneous presentation of T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia.

T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia (T-PLL) is the most common mature T-cell leukemia (MTCL). Cutaneous involvement is a characteristic symptom of T-PLL and appears in up to one-third of cases; however, T-PLL is a relatively unknown disease in the field of dermatology. In this article, we seek to increase awareness and educate physicians about the clinical manifestations of T-PLL.

Viral-associated trichodysplasia of immunosuppression: report of a pediatric patient with response to oral valganciclovir.

Background: Viral-associated trichodysplasia of immunosuppression is an increasingly recognized entity characterized by follicular-based papules, primarily in the central part of the face, that produce variable degrees of alopecia and dysmorphic features. It has been primarily described in transplant recipients but has recently been recognized in patients receiving chemotherapy for leukemia and lymphoma. It is associated with distinctive histologic features such as dilated anagen hair follicles, absent hair papillae, and abrupt cornification of the inner root sheath.

Upregulation of xCT, the inducible subunit of a membrane-bound amino acid transporter, replenishes intracellular glutathione stores to maintain cell viability in an environment of oxidative stress. xCT also serves as a fusion-entry receptor for the Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), the causative agent of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). Ongoing KSHV replication and infection of new cell targets is important for KS progression, but whether xCT regulation within the tumor microenvironment plays a role in KS pathogenesis has not been determined.

Cutaneous warts are a common presenting complaint in children and adolescents. Common, plantar, or flat warts are cutaneous manifestations of the human papillomavirus. The treatment of warts poses a therapeutic challenge for physicians.
