: Understanding sex-based differences in cardiovascular outcomes is paramount to improving clinical outcomes. Surgery is an aggressive but effective therapy for ascending aortic aneurysm. We sought to determine if being a woman is a risk factor for long-term mortality after this surgery.

The Fourth Maastricht Consensus Conference on Thrombosis included the following themes. Theme 1: The "coagulome" as a critical driver of cardiovascular disease. Blood coagulation proteins also play divergent roles in biology and pathophysiology, related to specific organs, including brain, heart, bone marrow, and kidney.

This article discusses the differentiation by gender displayed by children between 8 and 12 years old on how they used their free time during the COVID-19 pandemic in Chile. This study had a qualitative approach, where 43 in-depth interviews were conducted with children from three different regions of the country, using participatory photo-elicitation as the central tool. The main results of the study show a configuration of free time based on gender stereotypes, showing that boys are the ones who most adhere to such stereotypes, triggering a crisis in the identity construction of masculinities during childhood.

Objectives: To analyze gender disparity in scientific productivity reflected by the authorship of articles in the journal Emergencias over the past decade.

Material And Methods: Retrospective longitudinal study. We included articles in all issues published between January 2011 and December 2020, analyzing the number of authors, their gender, article type, year of publication, and preferential authorship credit (first author, corresponding author, and last author positioning).

The Trifecta aortic valve is a prosthesis with externally mounted leaflets and a stent which may be deformed during implant. Our aim was to know if the use of the holder as a protection device during the knotting has an impact on the incidence of structural valve deterioration (SVD) or endocarditis. Prospective cohort study where all patients who underwent aortic valve replacement with a Trifecta aortic valve between 2013 and 2018 were included.

Introduction And Objectives: Severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is associated with poor prognosis when left untreated, and a growing number of studies on transcatheter tricuspid valve repair (TTVr) have been published over the last few months.

Methods: We performed a comprehensive systematic review of published literature providing clinical data on TTVr for patients with significant TR. Early and mid-term clinical and echocardiographic outcomes were evaluated.

Background: Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) is crucial in tissue remodeling after an adverse cardiac event. In experimental studies, melatonin has been found to attenuate MMP-9 activation. The present study assessed the effects of systemic melatonin administration on the prognosis of patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) successfully treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention, and to examine the effects on MMP-9 levels.

A growing consensus seems to be emerging that dexamethasone is a crucial component in the treatment of COVID-19-associated oxygen-dependent respiratory failure. Although dexamethasone has an undeniably beneficial effect on the inflammatory response in a subgroup of patients, the potential negative effects of corticosteroids must also be considered. In view of these negative effects, we argue that a one-size-fits-all dexamethasone approach may be potentially harmful in specific subsets of patients with COVID-19-associated ARDS.

Unlabelled: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most frequent cause of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Etiopathogenic and prognostic characteristics in young patients may differ from older patients and young women may present worse outcomes than men. We aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics and prognosis of men and women with premature STEMI.

Background: Whether or not inhalation of airborne desert dust has adverse health effects is unknown. The present study, based on a systematic review and meta-analysis, was carried out to assess the influence desert dust on cardiovascular mortality, acute coronary syndrome, and heart failure.

Methods: A systematic search was made in PubMed and Embase databases for studies published before March 2020.

Introduction And Objectives: In the last few decades, there has been a continuous process of improvement in medical treatment and secondary prevention measures after ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Patients older than 65 years are at increased risk of death due to this event. Our aim was to determine whether patients aged less than 65 years and 65 years and older experiencing a STEMI can recover a life expectancy similar to that of the general population of the same age, sex, and geographical region.

Background: The durability of aortic valve bioprosthesis and the structural valve deterioration (SVD) are could be treated with valve-in-valve (VIV) transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). This technique has been proven to be a feasible procedure with good results in selected patients. The aim of this work was to assess the long-term results of this TAVI with an autoexpandable valve in patients with failed Mitroflow (MF) bioprosthetic aortic valves.

The Trifecta aortic valve has excellent hemodynamics characteristics. Moreover, the Perceval prosthesis may achieve better hemodynamics than the conventional valves; therefore, it has been proposed to reduce the incidence of patient-prosthesis mismatch. Our aim was to compare the prevalence of this complication between both prostheses.

Background: Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) has been shown to reduce hospital stays and pain compared with open lobectomy to treat non-small cell lung cancer. Because of the low rate of deaths, it is difficult to show differences in survival in individual studies. The objective of this study was to compare short- and long-term mortality by means of a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates whether patients over 75 who experience ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) treated with primary PCI have similar survival rates as their peers.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 450 patients and found that their survival rates at 1, 3, and 5 years were comparable to a matched reference population, with no significant impact from sex on survival outcomes.
  • Overall, the findings indicate that the critical phase for survival is within the first 30 days post-STEMI, after which the long-term survival rates for elderly patients align closely with those of the general population.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients over 75 with severe aortic stenosis have poor prognosis, but transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVI) can improve survival rates.
  • A study compared the survival of 526 older patients who underwent TAVI to the general population's survival in the same demographic.
  • Results showed that while TAVI patients have similar long-term survival rates to the general population during follow-up, postoperative mortality significantly influences overall survival outcomes.

: The life expectancy of patients who undergo ascending aortic replacement is unknown. The life expectancy of a population depends on a collection of environmental and socio-economic factors of the territory where they reside. Our aim was to compare the life expectancy of patients undergoing surgery for ascending aortic aneurysm with that of the general population matching by age, sex, and territory.
