Multidrug resistance (MDR) commonly leads to cancer treatment failure because cancer cells often expel chemotherapeutic drugs using ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, which reduce drug levels within the cells. This study investigated the clinical characteristics and single nucleotide variant (SNV) in , , , , and , and their association with mortality in pediatric patients with central nervous system tumors (CNST). Using TaqMan probes, a real-time polymerase chain reaction genotyped 15 SNPs in 111 samples.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common malignancy among Mexican and Hispanic children and the first cause of death by disease in Mexico. We propose a "triple-hit" explanation for the survival gap affecting this population. The first hit can be attributed to epidemiology and social, cultural, and economic burdens.

The 5-year relative survival rate estimate of treated patients with non-rhabdomyosarcoma soft tissue sarcomas (NRSTS) is ∼50% since they generally present with tumor progression, relapse, metastasis, and/or chemoresistance. The expression of cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes in malignancies can affect the pharmacology of drugs commonly used in chemotherapy or confer susceptibility to development of chemical carcinogenesis; in addition, their specific tumor expression can be used as a therapeutic target. Using qPCR and Western blot assays, the expression of CYP1B1, CYP2E1, CYP3A4, and CYP3A5 were analyzed in a cohort of tumor tissue paired with non-malignant adjacent tissue of patients with NRSTS.

The gene fusions BCR-ABL1, TCF3-PBX1, and ETV6-RUNX1 are recurrent in B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) and are found with low frequency in coexistence with CRLF2 (cytokine receptor-like factor 2) rearrangements and overexpression. There is limited information regarding the CRLF2 abnormalities and dominant-negative IKZF1 isoforms associated with surrogate markers of Jak2, ABL, and Ras signaling pathways. To assess this, we evaluated 24 Mexican children with B-ALL positive for recurrent gene fusions at diagnosis.

Today one of the main causes of mortality is cancer. Survival in cancer patients has increased from 1970 (25%) to the present (80%). Following the introduction of anthracyclines as a cancer treatment since 1960-70, more than 60% of patients are treated with these agents, although chemotherapeutic exposure leads to cardiovascular diseases as the main cause of mortality in surviving patients.

It is important to study the relationship between extremely low-frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MFs) and childhood leukemia, particularly in locations with a high incidence of this neoplasm in children and an elevated exposure to ELF-MF, such as Mexico City. The aim was to investigate the association between ELF-MF exposure and the risk of B-lineage acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL). A case-control study was conducted in Mexico City during the period from 2010 to 2011.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to explore the relationship between parental age at conception and the risk of childhood acute leukaemia (AL) among Mexican children, given the high incidence of the disease in that population.
  • - A multicenter case-control approach was used, comparing children diagnosed with AL to matched controls, and applying statistical analysis to investigate the impacts of maternal and paternal ages on this risk.
  • - The findings revealed minimal associations between parental ages and childhood AL, though a higher risk for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) was noted when mothers were 20-24 years old, and some association for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) with younger mothers and fathers.

Ifosfamide (IFA) is an effective antineoplastic for solid tumours in children, although it is associated with high levels of systemic toxicity and causes death in some cases. The aim of this study was to determine whether the presence of certain allelic variants of genes , , and increases the risk of toxicity in children with solid tumours treated with ifosfamide. A total of 131 DNA samples were genotyped by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) using TaqMan probes.

Article Synopsis
  • B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common cancer in children, especially in Mexico, with over 30% of patients facing relapse and poor outcomes despite a high five-year survival rate.
  • Research into gene expression profiles has identified certain transcripts that can help predict disease prognosis, particularly focusing on the ZNF695 gene, which has multiple transcript variants due to alternative splicing.
  • In studies, the ZNF695 variants were found to be predominantly expressed in leukemia patients' bone marrow, and notably, the expression levels of long noncoding RNA ZNF695 were linked to survival rates.

A high impact of ARID5B SNPs on acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) susceptibility has been described in Hispanic children; therefore, it is relevant to know if they influence the high incidence of childhood-ALL in Mexicans. Seven SNPs (rs10821936, rs10994982, rs7089424, rs2393732, rs2393782, rs2893881, rs4948488) of ARID5B were analyzed in 384 controls and 298 ALL children using genomic DNA and TaqMan probes. The SNPs were analyzed for deviation of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium; Fisher's exact test was used to compare the genotypic and allelic frequencies between controls and patients.

In Mexico, due to the high rates of diabetes, overweight, and obesity, there has also been noted an increased newborn weight, which may be contributing to the elevated incidence rate of childhood acute leukemia (AL). We conducted a case-control study in public hospitals of Mexico City aimed to know whether a greater weight at birth is associated with a higher risk of developing leukemia. We included incident cases with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) diagnosed between 2010 and 2015.
