The industrial hemp plant Cannabis sativa is a source of vegetable fiber for both textiles and biocomposite applications. After harvesting, the plant stems are laid out on the ground and colonized by microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) naturally present in the soil and on the stems. By producing hydrolytic enzymes that degrade the plant wall polymers, the natural cement that binds the fiber bundles together is removed, thus facilitating their dissociation (retting process) which is required for producing high-performant fibers.

This is an important problem in water bodies. In this paper, we propose a low-cost sensor to monitor eutrophication in concentrations between 0 to 200 mg/L and in different mixtures of sediment and algae (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100% algae, the rest are sediment).

Excessive glutamate activity in the basal ganglia resulting from degeneration of the nigrostriatal dopamine pathway has been implicated in the motor symptoms, NMS and dyskinesias in PD patients. In this study, we investigated the effects of a selective mGlu5 negative allosteric modulator (NAM), dipraglurant, in a rodent motor symptoms model of PD, but also in models of anxiety, depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, all of which are among the most prevalent NMS symptoms.

Interestingly, the wild-type allele associated with viral gastroenteritis susceptibility inversely appears to be protective against several inflammatory or autoimmune diseases for yet unclear reasons, although a influence on microbiota composition has been observed.

It might cause different problems in the irrigation infrastructure and should be monitored. In this paper, we present a low-cost sensor based on optical absorption in order to determine the concentration of algae in irrigation ponds.

The aim of this study is to assess the potential of biofiltration for the treatment of such gaseous emissions. This work highlights that biofiltration is able to remove both hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds within a single pilot unit of biofiltration.

Here we show structures of homodimers of the family C metabotropic glutamate receptor 2 (mGlu2) in distinct functional states and in complex with heterotrimeric G. Upon activation of the extracellular domain, the two transmembrane domains undergo extensive rearrangement in relative orientation to establish an asymmetric TM6-TM6 interface that promotes conformational changes in the cytoplasmic domain of one protomer.

Here, we tested the hypothesis that such antibodies may confer protection against COVID-19 so that patients would be preferentially found among people with low amounts of specific anti-carbohydrate antibodies since individual repertoires vary considerably. After selecting glycan epitopes commonly represented in the human anti-carbohydrate antibody repertoire that may also be expressed on viral glycans, plasma levels of the corresponding antibodies were determined by ELISA in 88 SARS-CoV-2 infected individuals, including 13 asymptomatic, and in 82 non-infected controls.

Despite between-study discrepancies, an overall consensus has emerged whereby blood group O appears associated with a lower risk of COVID-19, while non-O blood types appear detrimental. Two major hypotheses may explain these findings: First, natural anti-A and anti-B antibodies could be partially protective against SARS-CoV-2 virions carrying blood group antigens originating from non-O individuals.

Sampling was performed over 2 days, in different seasons. The small viable particulate matter < 10 μm (bioaerosols) and cultivable bacteria reached their highest concentrations in the milking parlour.

Methods: This is an observational study in two surgical intensive care units (ICUs) of a single institution and a research laboratory.
iNKT cells recognize CD1d/α-galactosylceramide (α-GalCer) complexes via their invariant TCR receptor and stimulate the immune response. Many α-GalCer analogues have been investigated to interrogate this interaction. Following our previous work related to the modification of the hydrogen bond network between α-GalCer and CD1d, we have now focused our attention on the synthesis of 3-deoxy-3,3-difluoro- and 3,4-dideoxy-3,3,4,4-tetrafluoro-α-GalCer analogues, and studied their ability to stimulate human iNKT cells.

The activation or the inhibition of G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) implicated in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disorders is considered as a relevant approach for the treatment of these diseases. The modulation of the relevant GPCRs targets by positive or by negative allosteric modulators appears to be promising, the major challenge remaining the discovery of these molecules. In this review, we highlight the recent development in this field and the therapeutic potential of selected GPCRs allosteric modulators.

It uses α1,2fucosylated glycans, histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs), as attachment factors, with their absence or low expression generating resistance to the disease. Synthesis of these glycans requires an α1,2fucosyltransferase.

In this article, we describe a different exploration from 5 that led to the discovery of a novel subseries of phenylpiperidine-substituted pyridones. The optimization strategy involved the introduction of different spacers between the pyridone core and the phenyl ring of 5.

As a reference, duplicated biofilters were implemented, and operating conditions were similar for all bioprocesses. The first step of this work was to determine the efficiency removal level achieved for each compound of the mixture and in a second step, to assess the longitudinal distribution of biodegradation activities and evaluate the total bacteria, Hyphomicrobium sp.

Allosteric modulators (AMs) are a promising avenue towards safe and selective drugs. AMs can interact selectively with unique domains distinct from the endogenous ligand binding site of receptors, up- or downregulating the response to receptor activation. Emphasis is placed in this article on the latest development in high-sensitivity technologies designed to identify AMs of G-protein coupled receptors.

Potency was improved via iterative SAR, and physicochemical properties were optimized to deliver orally bioavailable compounds acceptable for in vivo testing. A lead molecule from the series demonstrated dose-dependent activity in the second phase of the rat formalin test from 30 mg/kg, and a preliminary PK/PD relationship was established.

Here, we report the in vitro activity, in vivo efficacy and safety profile of 5PAM523 (4-Fluorophenyl){(2R,5S)-5-[5-(5-fluoropyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-oxadiazol-3-yl]-2-methylpiperidin-1-yl}methanone), a structurally novel positive allosteric modulator selective of mGlu5. The initial weak in vitro activity of the hit 13 was quickly improved, although compounds still had suboptimal druglike properties.

The absence of the 3- and 4-hydroxyls on the sphingoid base is combined with the introduction of mono or difluoro substituent at C3 (analogues 8 and 9, respectively) to evaluate their effect on the stability of the ternary CD1d/GalCer/TCR complex which strongly modulate the immune responses. Biological evaluations were performed in vitro on human cells and in vivo in mice and results discussed with support of modeling studies.

However, studies supporting the self-medication hypothesis have most often been carried out on chronic patients stabilized by antipsychotics.

Allosteric modulators of metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR) subtypes 1-8 have been shown to offer a valid way to develop small molecule non aminoacid-like therapeutics that can be administered orally and that readily cross the blood-brain barrier. Allosteric modulators of glutamatergic receptors and in particular mGluR5 have emerged as a novel and highly desirable class of compounds for the treatment of central nervous system (CNS) disorders and peripheral disorders. This article provides medicinal chemistry highlights around the chemical classes of potent and highly selective mGluR5 negative allosteric modulators (NAMs) and their therapeutic potential.
