The Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse (the Royal Commission) examined child sexual abuse within a wide range of institutions that provide services to children, this included residential facilities. The current study (funded by the Royal Commission) considers young people's perception of safety in residential care; specifically, the current study attended to the voices of young people who spoke about sexual harassment and assault in qualitative interviews. Interviews were conducted with young people aged between 13 and 21 years who were or had recently been in residential care.

Objective: To investigate the distribution of cytosine-guanine dinucleotide (CpG) sites with a variable level of DNA methylation of the D4Z4 macrosatellite element in patients with facioscapulohumeral dystrophy (FSHD).

Methods: By adapting bisulfite modification to deep sequencing, we performed a comprehensive analysis of D4Z4 methylation across D4Z4 repeats and adjacent 4qA sequence in DNA from patients with FSHD1, FSHD2, or mosaicism and controls.

Results: Using hierarchical clustering, we identified clusters with different levels of methylation and separated, thereby the different groups of samples (controls, FSHD1, and FSHD2) based on their respective level of methylation.

4-Pyrans (4-Pys) and 1,4-dihydropyridines (1,4-DHPs) are important classes of heterocyclic scaffolds in medicinal chemistry. Herein, an indium(III)-catalyzed one-pot domino reaction for the synthesis of highly functionalized 4-Pys, and a model of 1,4-DHP is reported. This alternative approach to the challenging Hantzsch 4-component reaction enables the synthesis of fused-tricyclic heterocycles, and the mechanistic studies underline the importance of an intercepted-Knoevenagel adduct to achieve higher chemoselectivity towards these types of unsymmetrical heterocycles.

Background: There are no published data on post-transplant outcomes in durable ventricular assist device (VAD)-supported adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) patients.

Methods: We compared post-transplant outcomes in VAD-supported vs non-VAD-supported ACHD patients using the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients.

Results: At 1 year, there was no difference in post-transplant mortality between VAD-supported (12 patients) and non-VAD-supported (671 patients) ACHD patients.

Graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is the most promising material for industrial-scale applications based on graphene monolayers. It also holds promise for spintronics; despite being polycrystalline, spin transport in CVD graphene has been measured over lengths up to 30 μm, which is on par with the best measurements made in single-crystal graphene. These results suggest that grain boundaries (GBs) in CVD graphene, while impeding charge transport, may have little effect on spin transport.
