The use of depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), a 3-monthly injectable hormonal contraceptive, is associated with an increased risk of HIV acquisition possibly through alteration of the vaginal microbiome. In this longitudinal interventional study, we investigated the impact of DMPA administration on the vaginal microbiome in Hispanic White and Black women at the baseline (visit 1), 1 month (visit 2), and 3 months (visit 3) following DMPA treatment by using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. No significant changes in the vaginal microbiome were observed after DMPA treatment when Hispanic White and Black women were analysed as a combined group.

Precision medicine is a patient-specific approach that integrates all relevant clinical, genetic and biological information in order to optimise the therapeutic benefit relative to the possibility of side-effects for each individual. Recent clinical trials have shown that higher blood eosinophil counts are associated with a greater efficacy of inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Blood eosinophil counts are a biomarker with potential to be used in clinical practice, to help target ICS treatment with more precision in COPD patients with a history of exacerbations despite appropriate bronchodilator treatment.

Spasticity after spinal cord injury has considerable quality of life implications, impacts on rehabilitation efforts and necessitates long-term multi-disciplinary pharmacological and non-pharmacological management. The potassium chloride co-transporter (KCC2) plays a central role in intracellular chloride homeostasis and the inhibitory function of mature neurons. Animal studies consistently have demonstrated a downregulation of KCC2 activity after spinal cord transection, causing a shift from the inhibitory action of gamma-aminobutyric acid and glycine to an excitatory effect.

Introduction: Home-based self-rehabilitation programmes combined with botulinum toxin injections (BTIs) appear to be a relevant approach to increase the recommended intensive rehabilitation of patients with spasticity following a stroke. In the present pilot study, the efficiency of mammography X-rays to induce DNA double strand breaks (DSB) in mammary epithelial cells was investigated.
