Experimental models of human pathology are useful guides to new approaches towards improving clinical and surgical treatments. A systematic search through PubMed using the syntax (shock) AND (trauma) AND (animal model) AND (cardiovascular) AND ("2010/01/01"[PDat]: "2015/12/31"[PDat]) found 88 articles, which were reduced by manual inspection to 43 entries. These were divided into themes and each theme is subsequently narrated and discussed conjointly.

Intraportal versus Systemic Pentoxifylline Infusion after Normothermic Liver Ischemia: Effects on Regional Blood Flow Redistribution and Hepatic Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury.

Cardiology in Brazilian scientific journals: an overview.

Cardiology has been and is a very significant fraction of the Brazilian contribution to science. In older days, the most significant part of this work was directed to foreign periodicals, but the quasi-simultaneous emergence of SciELO and PUBMED has ordained a redirection of much of this work to Brazilian periodicals. We here survey some of this more recent contribution for the benefit of readers of Revista Brasileira de Cirurgia Cardiovascular.

Recent cardiopulmonary studies.

Over the period 2009 - 2010, Clinics has published a relatively large number of original studies dealing with the cardiovascular and pulmonary system. Twenty of these have attracted significant numbers of citations within this relatively short time span. This short review covers these aspects of recent research with direct interest to cardiologists.

Continuously variable rating: a new, simple and logical procedure to evaluate original scientific publications.

Objective: Impact Factors (IF) are widely used surrogates to evaluate single articles, in spite of known shortcomings imposed by cite distribution skewness. We quantify this asymmetry and propose a simple computer-based procedure for evaluating individual articles.

Hepatosplanchnic vasoregulation and oxygen consumption during selective aortic blood flow reduction and reperfusion.

Background: Several studies have shown that the distribution of cardiac output to the intra-abdominal organs may vary during low-flow states. In this study, we developed an experimental model to selectively reduce the abdominal aortic blood flow in order to assess the initial impact of selective hepatosplanchnic hypoperfusion on regional blood flow redistribution.

Methods: Eight anesthetized and mechanically ventilated mongrel dogs were subjected to aortic blood flow reduction with an occluder in a stepwise manner by 50% and 100% for 45 min.

Metabolic and infectious pathologies in Brazilian medical literature: a review.

Objective: This review of original reports on metabolic and infectious diseases that were recently published in Brazilian journals is designed to inform the readership of CLINICS about their content.

Methods: I conducted a search in PubMed for original research articles (clinical or basic research) recently published (2008-2009) by Brazilian medical and biological periodicals. Papers on metabolic pathologies were retrieved by searching for appropriate keywords such as metabolic syndrome and obesity.
