A patient with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, preparing for an autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT), developed leprosy. The patient was successfully treated with rifampicin, ofloxacin, and doxycycline, and the HSCT was performed without complications, being the first report, to our knowledge, of leprosy in an autologous HSCT patient.

Synthesis, Characterization and Cytotoxicity Evaluation of New Biimidazole Palladium(II) Complexes with Thioureas.

The reactions between [PdCl2(tmbiimH2)]·H2O (1) tmbiimH2 = 2,2'-bis(4,5-dimethylimidazole) and thiourea (tu), N-methylthiourea (mtu), N-phenylthiourea (ptu), N,N'-dimethylthiourea (dmtu) or N,N'-diphenylthiourea (dptu) in the 1:2 molar ratio resulted in the compounds [PdL2(tmbiimH2)]Cl2·nH2O L = tu (2), mtu (3), ptu (4), dmtu (5) and dptu (6), which were characterized by elemental analyses, infrared (IR), and 1H NMR spectroscopies and conductivity measurements. The IR spectra of 1-6 were consistent with the presence of chelating tmbimH2 ligand. A Perspective on Extracellular Vesicles Proteomics.

Increasing attention has been given to secreted extracellular vesicles (EVs) in the past decades, especially in the portrayal of their molecular cargo and role as messengers in both homeostasis and pathophysiological conditions. This review presents the state-of-the-art proteomic technologies to identify and quantify EVs proteins along with their PTMs, interacting partners and structural details. The rapid growth of mass spectrometry-based analytical strategies for protein sequencing, PTMs and structural characterization has improved the level of molecular details that can be achieved from limited amount of EVs isolated from different biological sources.

Evaluation of the applicability and effectiveness of a molecular strategy for identifying weak D and DEL phenotype among D- blood donors of mixed origin exhibiting high frequency of RHD*Ψ.

Background: Molecular tests designed to detect the presence of active RHD gene among D- donors have been successfully applied in people of European ancestry, but not in admixed populations with a considerable frequency of RHD*Ψ. Introduction: Spondylopelvic dissociation is an uncommon and complex injury that results from high-energy trauma with axial overloading through the sacrum. Due to the life-threatening nature of these injuries, standard Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) protocol must be used in the trauma setting as part of the initial management of these patients. The key to diagnosis is a good physical exam coupled with high level of suspicion.

Smoking Abstinence Twelve Months after an Acute Coronary Syndrome.

Studies on the cognitive working mechanism of smoking cessation in high-risk populations are few and much needed, and identifying long-term psychosocial factors to smoking cessation are relevant to improve intervention for cardiac patient groups. This longitudinal study followed patients who smoked and suffered an acute coronary syndrome from hospitalization to 12 months after clinical discharge. Questionnaires were administered to assess nicotine dependence, behavioral dependence, autonomous self-regulation, perceived competence, social support, anxiety, depressive symptoms and meaning in life at baseline, six months and twelve months after clinical discharge.

Anticancer cellular immunotherapies derived from umbilical cord blood.

Introduction: The lack of highly effective drugs in many malignancies has prompted scientific interest in the development of alternative treatment strategies. Cellular immunotherapy involving the adoptive transfer of immune cells that potently recognize and eliminate malignantly transformed cells has become a promising new tool in the anticancer armory. A disease risk index (DRI) has been defined for stratifying heterogeneous cohorts of patients undergoing allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). This index defines 4 distinct groups with different outcomes, dividing patients by disease type and status and considering cytogenetics for acute myeloid leukaemia and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Recently, the DRI has been refined to include rare diseases and improve MDS stratification by blast percentage and response to prior therapy.

Endothelial and Circulating Progenitor Cells in Hematological Diseases and Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation.

Background: Circulating endothelial cells (CECs), originated form endothelial progenitors (EPCs) are mature cells not associated with vessel walls and detached from the endothelium. Normally, they are present in insignificant amounts in the peripheral blood of healthy individuals. On the other hand, elevated CECs and EPCs levels have been reported in the peripheral blood of patients with different types of cancers and other diseases.

Chikungunya Virus Infection Associated with Encephalitis and Anterior Uveitis.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an RNA virus transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. The clinical manifestations include fever, arthralgia, rash, and other atypical clinical findings including ocular lesions. We report the case of a 57-year-old man with meningoencephalitis and anterior uveitis due to CHIKV.

Posterior sacroiliac osteotomy: an alternative to the ilioinguinal approach for pelvic reconstruction in misalignment lesions.

Pelvic ring fractures occur in association with potentially fatal lesions, whose treatment is a priority in the polytrauma setting. As consequence, the definitive orthopedic approach may be postponed, leading patients to chronic and potentially disabling deformities. The treatment of these deformities is a challenge, requiring highly complex and staged surgical reconstructions.
