Microsporidia, including , are emerging pathogens which cause opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients, such as those with AIDS, cancer, the elderly and people on immunosuppressive drugs. Intestinal mucosa (IM) is crucial for developing an efficient adaptive immune response against pathogenic micro-organisms, thereby preventing their colonization and subsequent infection. As immunosuppressive drugs affect the intestinal immune response is little known.

The use of natural antioxidants in cancer therapy has increased: first, due to the potential of natural antioxidants to kill tumour cells and second, because of their capacity to protect healthy cells from the damage caused by chemotherapy. This review article discusses the antioxidant properties of extracts obtained from medicinal plants from the Brazilian Cerrado and the cell death profile induced by each of these extracts in malignant cells. Next, we describe the capacity of other medicinal plants from the Cerrado to protect against chemotherapy-induced cell toxicity.

In this study we characterized the genetic environment of and genes carried by 46 isolates obtained from 20 chicken carcasses produced by five different brands in Brazil, including exporters and antibiotic-free-certified producers, purchased between 2010 and 2014. Similar plasmids characterized according to size and incompatibility group (Inc) were identified in belonging to different MLST-ST collected, regardless of carcass brand or production system. Hybridization assays with transconjugant strains revealed that gene ( = 19) was located on 85 kb plasmids of IncB/O, IncI1, IncFIB, or nontypeable groups.

Thus, we determined the usefulness of raw BI measures in tracking body fluids changes during the preparation period prior to competition in elite Judo athletes. At baseline (weight stability), 27 male athletes were evaluated (23.

Aim: To evaluate the association of psychogenic and hormonal factors with ED in men infected with HTLV-1.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we compared total testosterone, follicle stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, prolactin, anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms, and neurologic manifestations in HTLV-1-infected men with or without ED.
Long-range enhancers govern the temporal and spatial control of gene expression; however, the mechanisms that regulate enhancer activity during normal and malignant development remain poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate a role for aberrant chromatin accessibility in the regulation of expression in T-cell lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). Central to this process, the NOTCH1- enhancer (N-Me), a long-range T cell-specific enhancer, shows dynamic changes in chromatin accessibility during T-cell specification and maturation and an aberrant high degree of chromatin accessibility in mouse and human T-ALL cells.

No significant differences were detected in the δC stable isotopic ratio between the two sites analyzed; however, in the δN stable isotopic ratio, a significant difference was observed. Regarding the intraspecific response of stable isotopic ratio, D.

Methods: Marmosets belonging to two free-living groups were captured for marking and obtaining biological material. The collected blood was centrifuged to obtain the plasma and thus to determine the concentration of PTP.
Bioelectricity
September 2019
Bioelectricity is the electrical activity produced by living organisms. Understanding the role of bioelectricity in a disease context is important as it contributes to both disease diagnosis and therapeutic intervention. Electrophysiology tools work well for neuronal cultures; however, they are limited in their ability to detect the electrical activity of non-neuronal cells, wherein the majority of cancers arise.

Methods: One hundred four patients with LE treated with arthroscopic debridement of the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) tendon were enrolled in this retrospective study. They were evaluated using Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) scale.
Objective: analyze the safety culture of multidisciplinary teams from three neonatal intensive care units of public hospitals in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
Method: a cross-sectional survey conducted with 514 health professionals, using the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture; data were subjected to a descriptive statistical analysis in software R-3.3.
Maisonneuve lesion is a rare entity, accounting for 7% of all ankle fractures. One of its variants includes a proximal tibiofibular dislocation, which is an even more unusual injury. This article reports the case of a 34-year-old male patient admitted to the emergency room with left lower limb edema after a sports trauma.

The method was fully validated, and the included parameters were selectivity, linearity, limits of quantification, precision and accuracy, stability, and recovery. The method was linear for all compounds from 10 to 400 ng/mL, except for haloperidol (5-100 ng/mL), presenting coefficients of determination higher than 0.

Hyperkalemia can lead to adverse outcomes, especially due to severe cardiac arrhythmias. It can also impair the cardiovascular effects of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors (RAASis) and potassium rich diets, as hyperkalemia frequently leads to their discontinuation.

The aim of this work was the development, optimization and full validation of a method applying microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS) coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to determine amphetamine (AMP), methamphetamine (MAMP), 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), 3,4-methylenedioxyethylmethamphetamine (MDMA), 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methyl-α-ethylfenilethylamine (MBDB), and 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-ethylamphetamine (MDE) in urine samples. Using 200 μL of sample, the MEPS procedure was optimized concerning type of sorbent, sample dilution, number of strokes, activation of the ion exchange mechanism and composition of both washing and elution solvents. The method was fully validated according to the Food and Drug Administration and the Scientific Working Group of Forensic Toxicology guidelines for the validation of bioanalytical methods.

Xenarthrans-anteaters, sloths, and armadillos-have essential functions for ecosystem maintenance, such as insect control and nutrient cycling, playing key roles as ecosystem engineers. Because of habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting pressure, and conflicts with domestic dogs, these species have been threatened locally, regionally, or even across their full distribution ranges. The Neotropics harbor 21 species of armadillos, 10 anteaters, and 6 sloths.
