Chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy is associated with an unbalanced immune response and impaired heart function, and available drugs do not prevent its development. Zileuton (Zi), a 5-lypoxigenase inhibitor, affects inflammatory/pro-resolution mediators. Herein, Zi treatment in the early phase of infection reduced parasitemia associated mainly with the direct effect of Zi on the parasite, and the enzyme epoxide hydrolase was the potential molecular target behind the trypanocidal effect.

Article Synopsis
  • Stress during pregnancy contributes to risks of cardiometabolic disorders and affects fetal liver protein responses, particularly in male offspring.
  • A study on Wistar rats showed that prenatal stress elevated maternal corticosterone levels and resulted in lower birth weights, especially in male offspring.
  • Male offspring exhibited distinct liver protein expressions related to stress responses, with increased androgen receptor and specific phosphorylation changes, while female offspring showed minimal hepatic impact from prenatal stress.

The ring-opening reaction of fluorinated oxetanes by halides, including alkylidene oxetanes and spirocyclic oxetanes, was highly stereoselective and directed by the presence of a fluorine atom. This reaction allowed a stereoselective preparation of tetrasubstituted alkenes and substituted pyrrolidines containing all-carbon quaternary centers. Theoretical calculations were performed to shed light on experimentally observed regioselectivity in the opening of oxetane derivatives.

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is initiated by a primary insult that triggers a cascade of pathological events, including damage to lung epithelial and endothelial cells, extracellular matrix disruption, activation of immune cells, and the release of pro-inflammatory mediators. These events lead to increased alveolar-capillary barrier permeability, resulting in interstitial/alveolar edema, collapse, and subsequent hypoxia and hypercapnia. ARDS not only affects the lungs but also significantly impacts the cardiovascular system.
