Occurrence, sources, and risk assessment of unconventional polycyclic aromatic compounds in marine sediments from sandy beach intertidal zones.

This study investigated the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), including parent polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their nitrated and oxygenated derivatives, in 48 sediment samples from the intertidal region of sandy beaches in Baía de Todos os Santos (BTS), Salvador, State of Bahia, Brazil. Polysonographic changes in obese patients with indication of bariatric surgery.

Introduction: obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is a serious confition that compromises the quality of life and survival of patients. Its main risk fator in adults is obesity and the gold standard test for diagnosis is polysomnography (PSG), mainly through the apneia-hypopnea index (AHI). Objective: to analyze the sleep pattern of obese patients with indication for bariatric surgery, determining the main polisomnographic parameters compromised by obesity.

Suffering and defense mechanisms: an analysis of the work of Primary Health Care nurses.

Objective: To analyze the suffering and coping strategies of nurses working in Primary Health Care considering the psychodynamics of their work.

Methods: Descriptive study with a qualitative approach, carried out with 11 nurses working in Primary Health Care. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, systematized, and interpreted using Bardin's content analysis method applied to recurrent themes.

Canadian demand and access to corneal transplantation: a provincial comparison.

To gather information from stakeholders involved in corneal donation and transplantation to inform discussion at the "National Consensus Forum on Improving Cornea Donation and Transplantation Access in Canada" held in February 2020, survey questions were posed to eye banks, transplanting ophthalmologists and organ donation organizations across Canada to learn more about demand, wait times, and access to tissue for transplant. The survey response rate was one hundred percent (100%) for eye banks and organ donation organizations while 64 percent (64%) of transplant ophthalmologists provided feedback. A number of opportunities for improvement were identified including: demand forecasting; infrastructure and strategies to align supply with demand; data collection and benchmarking of wait times for assessment and transplant to support consistency, equitability and transparency in access; and national collaboration in the development of a data strategy to accurately measure demand and access to cornea transplants in a consistent manner across all provinces to facilitate equity in access nationally.

Responses of marine zooplankton indicators after five years of a dam rupture in the Doce River, Southeastern Brazil.

Since November of 2015, when ore tailings from a dam rupture reached the Atlantic Ocean, researchers are trying to assess the degree of impact across the Doce River and adjacent coastal area. This study aims to use the zooplankton dynamics as a tool to evaluate the environmental impact in the coastal region, five years after the rupture, during periods of low and high river flow. Doce River flow varied from 49 to 5179 m/s and structured the zooplankton community between periods of low and high river flow, but salinity and chlorophyll-a had stronger correlation with depth (r = 0.

Systemic lupus erythematosus and pregnancy: A retrospective single-center study of 215 pregnancies from Portugal.

Objective: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a life-threatening disorder that affects women at reproductive age. We evaluate the clinical impact of pregnancy in a cohort of Portuguese SLE patients and the risk factors associated with maternal and fetal adverse outcomes.

Methods: A retrospective observational study that included all pregnant women with SLE managed at a Portuguese tertiary hospital, between January 1993 and December 2019.

Aim: To evaluate the potential use of Cephaeline as a therapeutic strategy to manage mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MEC) of the salivary glands.

An integrated study of the plankton community after four years of Fundão dam disaster.

Mining activities can affect the environment either by the tailings releasing or dams failures. The impact of the tailings can last decades and cause chronic effects due to their toxicity. The Fundão dam collapse, a relevant environmental disaster, occurred in November 2015 in Southeastern Brazil.

Toxicity of α-AgWO microcrystals to freshwater microalga Raphidocelis subcapitata at cellular and population levels.

Silver-based materials have microbicidal action, photocatalytic activity and electronic properties. The increase in manufacturing and consumption of these compounds, given their wide functionality and application, is a source of contamination to freshwater ecosystems and causes toxicity to aquatic biota. Therefore, for the first time, we evaluated the toxicity of the silver tungstate (α-AgWO), in different morphologies (cube and rod), for the microalga Raphidocelis subcapitata.

Formyl Peptide Receptors and Annexin A1: Complementary Mechanisms to Infliximab in Murine Experimental Colitis and Crohn's Disease.

Non-responsiveness to anti-TNF-α therapies presents relevant rates in inflammatory bowel disease patients, presenting the need to find biomarkers involved in therapeutic efficacy. Herein, we demonstrate that higher levels of colonic formyl peptide receptor 1 and annexin A1 correlate with histological recovery in Crohn's disease patients under remission. Using the dextran sulfate sodium colitis model in mice, we suggest that infliximab induces annexin A1 expression and secretion in activated intestinal leukocytes.

Pulmonary Hypertension in Obese Mice Is Accompanied by a Reduction in PPAR-γ Expression in Pulmonary Artery.

Obesity and insulin resistance (IR) are well-studied risk factors for systemic cardiovascular disease, but their impact on pulmonary hypertension (PH) is not well clarified. This study aims to investigate if diet-induced obesity induces PH and if peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR-γ) and/or endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress are involved in this process. Mice were maintained on a high-fat diet (HFD) for 4 months, and IR and PH were confirmed.

Method development using chemometric tools for determination of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in bottled mineral waters.

A simple method was developed to determine 14 endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in bottled waters, based on dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (d-µ-SPE) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Extraction was optimized using 2  factorial and Doehlert experimental designs. Optimized conditions were 80 mg C18, 25 min extraction at 1000 rpm, and 6 min desorption time.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Pregnancy: a Portuguese Case-Control Study.

Pregnancy in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients is associated with an increased risk of adverse outcomes. During pregnancy, SLE patients have a higher rate of miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm delivery, fetal growth restriction, or hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. To date, only a few case-control studies were published with the purpose to evaluate the magnitude of risk associated with pregnancy in lupus patients.

Actions for children's mental health on Unified Health System (SUS) Primary Health Care: an integrative review of Brazilian literature.

This paper aimed to characterize actions directed to children's mental health (CMH) in Primary Health Care (PHC), based on an integrative review of Brazilian literature (2006-2017). The searches were carried out from LILACS, SciELO and VHL Network databases. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 13 articles were identified for analysis, which were presented in three thematic axes: 1) Characterization of the demands on CMH for PHC; 2) Actions and interventions on CMH carried out in PHC; and 3) Difficulties and propositions for the implementation of actions on CMH in PHC.

Physicochemical properties and biological activities of bracatinga honeydew honey from different geographical locations.

Unlabelled: Bracatinga ( Bentham) honeydew honey is a Brazilian dark honey in increasing international appreciation. In this sense, the knowledge of its composition and potential biological properties becomes indispensable. In the present study, the physicochemical characteristics, including mineral and phenolic composition, and the scavenging, reducing, and antimicrobial proprieties of bracatinga honeydew honey (bhh) from five different geographical locations, were investigated.

A Novel Method for the Detection of SARS-CoV-2 Based on Graphene-Impedimetric Immunosensor.

Due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, there has been an increase in the search for affordable healthcare devices for mass testing and rapid diagnosis. In this context, this work described a new methodology for SARS-CoV-2 detection based on an impedimetric immunosensor developed using the advantageous immobilization of antibodies in the reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The rGO was obtained by chemical synthesis from the commercial graphene oxide (GO), and the materials were morphologically, electrochemically and visually characterized.

Novel Relaxation Time Approximation to the Relativistic Boltzmann Equation.

We show that the widely used relaxation time approximation to the relativistic Boltzmann equation contains basic flaws, being incompatible with micro- and macroscopic conservation laws if the relaxation time depends on energy or general matching conditions are applied. We propose a new approximation that fixes such fundamental issues and maintains the basic properties of the linearized Boltzmann collision operator. We show how this correction affects transport coefficients, such as the bulk viscosity and particle diffusion.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is classified based on prerenal, intrinsic, and postrenal causes. In the newborn, AKI can occur after an insult during the prenatal, perinatal, or postnatal period. AKI is usually an underrecognized condition and its true incidence is unknown.

Background: Chylothorax in neonates results from leakage of lymph from thoracic lymphatic ducts and is mainly congenital or posttraumatic. The clinical course of the effusion is heterogeneous, and consensus on treatment, timing, and modalities of measures has not yet been established. This review aims to present, along with levels of evidence and recommendation grades, all current therapeutic possibilities for the treatment of chylothorax in neonates.
