The notion of a gamete recognition system that alerts females to the presence of gametes in their reproductive tract profoundly influences our understanding of the physiology of events leading to conception and the bearing of offspring. Here, we show that the female responds to gametes within her tract by modulating the environment in which pregnancy is initially established. We found distinct alterations in oviductal gene expression as a result of sperm and oocyte arrival in the oviduct, which led directly to distinct alterations to the composition of oviductal fluid in vivo.

The role of acute pulmonary vasodilator testing in portopulmonary hypertension (PoPH), a current contraindication for orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT), has not been thoroughly elucidated. The purpose of this work was to analyze the results of acute vasodilator testing with inhaled nitric oxide (NO), to compare them with intravenous epoprostenol (PGI(2)), and to investigate the acute effects of the oral vasodilator isosorbide-5-mononitrate (Is-5-MN), in patients with PoPH. The objectives of this study were: (1) to evaluate the influence of porcine embryo developmental stage on in vitro embryo development after vitrification, (2) to study the efficiency of the one-step dilution procedure, compared with conventional warming, for vitrified embryos at different stages of development, and (3) to determine the influence of the embryo donor on the in vitro survival of vitrified embryos at morulae and blastocyst stages. The epithelial localization and expression of the spermadhesin PSP-I and PSP-II subunits were determined in the testis, ductus epididymes (caput, corpus and cauda), seminal vesicles and bulbourethral glands of mature boars, using immunohistochemical, western blotting and RT-PCR methods. Immunohistochemistry showed positive labelling for PSP-I and PSP-II antibodies in the epithelium of seminal vesicles in all males tested. Although a high ATP diffusion rate implies homogeneous distribution of the principal energetic currency in the cytosol, local diffusion barriers represented by macromolecular structures can render ATP concentrations to be inhomogeneous. A method is presented here that provides apparent diffusion coefficient values in local intracellular regions and allows the estimation of spatial metabolite distribution. The apparent local diffusion coefficient for ATP in cardiac myofibrils was determined from the analysis of diffusion-dependent rightward shift of the substrate dependence for actomyosin ATPase activity using the reaction-diffusion model, which accounted for the properties of phosphotransfer reactions.
