A cytogenetic map on the entire length of rye chromosome 1R, including one translocation breakpoint, three isozyme loci and four C-bands.

A cytogenetic map of the whole 1 R chromosome of rye has been made, with distances between adjacent markers shorter than 50% recombination. Included in the map are isozyme loci Gpi-R1, Mdh-R1 and Pgd2, the telomere C-bands of the short arm (ts1) and the long arm (tl1), two interstitial C-bands in the short arm proximal to the nuclear organizing region (NOR) (is1) and in the middle of the long arm (il1), respectively, and translocation T273W (Wageningen tester set). By means of electron microscope analysis of spread pachytene synaptonemal complexes, the breakpoint of this translocation was physically mapped in the short arm of 1R, proximal to NOR, and in the long arm of 5R (contrary to previous assumptions).

Localization of the human cystatin D gene (CST5) to chromosome 20p11.21 by in situ hybridization.

The gene coding for cystatin D (CST5), a cysteine proteinase inhibitor, was mapped by fluorescent in situ hybridization to human chromosome 20p11.21. This assignment, together with previous data on mapping of members of the cystatin gene family, indicates that cystatin family II genes are all clustered on the short arm of chromosome 20, whereas cystatin family I and III genes are located on the long arm of chromosome 3.

Dialysis leg cramps. Efficacy of quinine versus vitamin E.

A controlled randomized double-blind study was done to determine the frequency and severity of leg cramps in 40 patients on dialysis with a history of leg cramps. All patients entered a 2 month placebo washout and were randomized into a 2 month double-dummy phase of quinine 325 mg at bedtime versus vitamin E 400 IU at bedtime. Of the 29 patients completing the study, 16 received quinine and 13 vitamin E.

The authors present one case of elongated Styloid process which surgeons was undertaken due to intense symptomatology. Oropharyngeal approach was used and showed to be the election way for resection.

Modification of system A amino acid carrier by diethyl pyrocarbonate.

Sodium-dependent alanine transport in plasma membrane vesicles from rat liver was inactivated in a time- and concentration-dependent fashion by prior treatment of membranes with the acylating reagent diethyl pyrocarbonate (DEPC). Both components of Na+/alanine cotransport (systems A and ASC) were inhibited. Exposure of vesicles to p-bromophenacyl bromide and methyl p-nitrobenzenesulfonate, which share with DEPC reactivity against histidine residues, also led to inhibition of alanine transport through systems A and ASC.

Sensitivity of system A and ASC transport activities to thiol-group-modifying reagents in rat liver plasma-membrane vesicles. Evidence for a direct binding of N-ethylmaleimide and iodoacetamide on A and ASC carriers.

In the present study we have examined the sensitivity of A and ASC amino-acid-carrier activities in rat liver plasma-membrane vesicles to the thiol-group modifying reagents N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) and iodoacetamide (IA). To this end, the different Na(+)-dependent entities involved in alanine transport were assessed.

Direct repair of spondylolysis.

Fifteen patients with spondylolysis have received compression screw and bone graft treatment for repair of this defect. In all but one case, solid fusion of the pars defect was achieved within six months after surgery. After one year, 13 of the 15 patients were able to participate fully in sports activities.

Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon content of particulate matter suspended in the atmosphere of La Plata, Argentina.

Twelve polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were evaluated by chromatographic procedures using a HPLC-UV detector and a GC-FID detector. The PAH were evaluated in airborne particulate matter collected in La Plata, Argentina, over a period of 2 years (with sampling periods of approximately 4 months). The samples were size fractionated, and the PAH in each fraction determined.

Acquired immune deficiency syndrome: postmortem findings.

The autopsies of 13 male homosexuals with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) were reviewed. All patients had laboratory evidence of cellular immune dysfunction. The most common diagnoses made were disseminated cytomegalovirus infection in 12 patients and Kaposi's sarcoma in 10.

[Partial resistance to thyroid hormones in a patient with a euthyroid goiter (author's transl)].

This case report deals with a 40 year-old female with goiter, elevated levels of peripheral thyroid hormones without the clinical picture of hyperthyroidism, and an exaggerated response to TSH and TRH. The fact that a feedback conversion appeared after progressive doses of T3 is outlined. Taking into account the elevated T3/T4 ratio, the high rT3, and the fact that all other pituitary hormones remained normal in the presence of increased levels of thyroid hormones, it is concluded that the case was one of incomplete universal resistance of the thyroid hormone receptors.

Glial polyp of the cervix and endometrium. Report of a case and review of the literature.

This paper describes the case of an 18-year-old woman who had recurrent inflammatory cervical endometrial polyps due to glial implantation after a spontaneous abortion treated with curettage. The lesion is considered benign.

Malignant lymphoma with plasmacytoid differentiation and polyclonal gammopathy.

Two patients are presented with lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly and infiltration of the bone marrow with plasmocytoid cells in whom an important heterogeneous hyperimmunoglobulinemia was detected (3.18 and 5.85 g/100/ml).
