Article Synopsis
  • This study focused on the specialty choices of international medical students in China, primarily from low- and middle-income countries, and how their migration plans affect these choices.
  • A questionnaire was distributed to 452 students from five universities, examining their demographic info, migration intentions, and specialty preferences; general surgery was the most chosen specialty, while physical medicine and rehabilitation was the least preferred.
  • Results indicated that half of the students did not intend to return to their home countries; gender influenced specialty choices, with male students favoring generalist specialties and female students leaning towards non-generalist ones.

Background: Teachers play a critical role in promoting interactions between students and engaging them in the learning process. This study builds on a study by Hertz-Lazarowitz and Shachar (1990) who found that during cooperative learning teachers' verbal behaviours were more helpful to and encouraging of their students' efforts while during whole-class instruction, their verbal behaviours tended to be more authoritarian, rigid, and impersonal.

Aim: This study seeks to determine if teachers who implement cooperative learning engage in more facilitative learning interactions with their students than teachers who implement group work only.
