Article Synopsis
  • Fogging with insecticides is a common method used to control adult mosquito populations in urban areas affected by dengue, particularly in high-rise buildings.
  • The study found that while mosquitoes tend to be more concentrated at lower levels of these buildings, they are still present throughout, and fogging did not significantly change their distribution or reduce their numbers effectively.
  • Due to increasing resistance to insecticides and the short-lived effects of fogging, the findings suggest that additional mosquito control strategies are necessary for effectively managing populations in high-rise condominiums.

Urbanization has caused an increase in favorable habitats for Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae), given their ability to reproduce in small and often non-degradable artificial water-containers. While much work has been done on Ae. aegypti biology and ecology in urban landscapes, the role of shading on immature stages as an independent factor from temperature, and any possible interactions between these factors, remains unexamined.

Nepenthes pitcher plants are colonized by a variety of specialized arthropods. As Aedes mosquitoes are container breeders, Nepenthes pitchers are a potential candidate oviposition site for vector species, such as Aedes aegypti (L.) and Aedes albopictus (Skuse).
