Presented here is a personal account of how the ideas and concepts underlying the design and construction of coordination polymers/MOFs developed historically - from the earliest conjectures in the 1970's about the possibility of using pre-organized building blocks to construct targeted polymeric structures, to the initial experimental implementation of these ideas in the mid-80's and to the introduction of the name MOFs in the 90's. The early exploratory work with pre-organized building blocks described in this article paved the way for the subsequent explosion of research activity in the CP/MOF area and for the generation of an essentially unlimited range of designed coordination polymer structures promising a variety of useful properties.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn this series, we outline a strategy for analyzing electrons and muons in gases in crossed electric and magnetic fields using the straightforward transport equations of momentum-transfer theory, plus empirical arguments. The method, which can be carried through from first principles to provide numerical estimates of quantities of experimental interest, offers a straightforward, physically transparent alternative to "off-the-shelf" simulation packages, such as Magboltz and GEANT. In this first article, we show how swarm data for electrons in helium gas subject to an electric field only can be incorporated into the analysis to generate electron swarm properties in helium gas in crossed electric and magnetic fields and to estimate the Lorentz angle in particular.

Aims: People with a learning disability are at increased risk of becoming homeless, but little is known about how learning disability is viewed by people accessing homeless services. This study aimed to obtain the views of people experiencing homelessness about learning disability, in the context of a project that was exploring how to increase identification of learning disability.
Methods: A qualitative approach was used, and 19 adults were interviewed who were receiving support from homeless services in the North-East of England.
Background: We explored the accuracy of using the learning disability screening questionnaire (LDSQ) in services for people experiencing homelessness in the United Kingdom.
Method: We examined the concordance between the LDSQ outcomes and assessments of intellectual disability. Seventy adults experiencing homelessness completed the LDSQ.
Seminal gas discharge experiments of the late 19th and early 20th centuries laid the foundations of modern physics, and the influence of this "golden era" continues to resonate well into the 21st century through modern technologies, medical applications, and fundamental scientific investigations. Key to this continuing success story has been the kinetic equation formulated by Ludwig Boltzmann in 1872, which provides the theoretical foundations necessary for analyzing such highly non-equilibrium situations. However, as discussed here, the full potential of Boltzmann's equation has been realized only in the past 50 years or so, with modern computing power and analytical techniques facilitating accurate solutions for various types of charged particles (ions, electrons, positrons, and muons) in gases.

To promote use of rapid syntheses in LMICs, the WHO's Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research (AHPSR) created the Embedding Rapid Reviews in Health Systems Decision-Making (ERA) Initiative. Following a call for proposals, four LMICs were selected (Georgia, India, Malaysia and Zimbabwe) and supported for 1 year to embed rapid response platforms within a public institution with a health policy or systems decision-making mandate.

Identifying the subcellular membranes essential for ferroptosis and the sequence of their peroxidation will illuminate drug discovery strategies and ferroptosis-relevant disease mechanisms. In this study, we employed fluorescence and stimulated Raman scattering imaging to examine the structure-activity-distribution relationship of ferroptosis-modulating compounds.

Objectives: To evaluate the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics (PD), safety, and tolerability of epidural SP-102 (10 mg dexamethasone sodium phosphate injectable gel) compared to an intravenous injection of 10 mg dexamethasone sodium phosphate, USP (IV USP).
Materials And Methods: Subjects with lumbosacral radiculopathy received a single dose of epidural SP-102, followed by a single dose of IV USP 4 weeks later. Dexamethasone plasma levels, cortisol levels, white blood cells (WBC), and blood glucose levels were assessed.
A remarkably flexible, multifunctional, 2D coordination polymer exhibiting an unprecedented mode of reversible mechanical motion, enabling pores to open and close, is reported. Such multifunctional materials are highly sought after, owing to the potential to exploit coexisting electronic and mechanical functionalities that underpin useful technological applications such as actuators and ultrasensitive detectors. The coordination polymer, of composition Mn(FTCNQ)(py) (FTCNQ = 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracycanoquinodimethane; py = pyridine), consists of Mn(II) centers bridged by FTCNQ dianions and coordinated by py molecules that extend above and below the 2D network.

We set out to develop an accessible, semi-automated "workflow" to conduct abstract screening for systematic reviews and other knowledge synthesis methods.
Methods: We adopt widely recommended text-mining and machine-learning methods to (1) process title-abstracts into numerical training data; and (2) train a classification model to predict eligible abstracts.
Objectives: To evaluate the impact of guidance and training on the inter-rater reliability (IRR), inter-consensus reliability (ICR) and evaluator burden of the Risk of Bias (RoB) in Non-randomized Studies (NRS) of Interventions (ROBINS-I) tool, and the RoB instrument for NRS of Exposures (ROB-NRSE).
Study Design And Setting: In a before-and-after study, seven reviewers appraised the RoB using ROBINS-I (n = 44) and ROB-NRSE (n = 44), before and after guidance and training. We used Gwet's AC statistic to calculate IRR and ICR.
