The maternal-fetal interface has long been considered as a frontier for an evolutionary arms race due to the close juxtaposition of genetically distinct tissues. In hemochorial species with deep placental invasion, including in humans, maternal stroma prepares its defenses against deep trophoblast invasion by decidualization, a differentiation process characterized by increased stromal cell matrix production, and contractile force generation. Decidualization has evolved from an ancestral wound healing response of fibroblast activation by the endometrial stroma.

Demand for sustainably produced biomass is expected to increase with the need to provide renewable commodities, improve resource security and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with COP26 commitments. Studies have demonstrated additional environmental benefits of using perennial biomass crops (PBCs), when produced appropriately, as a feedstock for the growing bioeconomy, including utilisation for bioenergy (with or without carbon capture and storage). The current standard for measuring coronary artery calcification to determine the extent of atherosclerosis is by calculating the Agatston score from computed tomography (CT). However, the Agatston score disregards pixel values less than 130 Hounsfield Units (HU) and calcium regions less than 1 mm. Due to this thresholding, the score is not sensitive to small, weakly attenuating regions of calcium deposition and may not detect nascent micro-calcification.
