Objective: To investigate the pathophysiology of perivascular mononuclear cell infiltrates observed in skeletal muscle from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Methods: Immunocytochemical techniques were used to examine frozen 5 microns sections from the quadriceps needle muscle biopsy specimens of 14 patients with SLE (including seven with infiltrates) for the expression of the cytokine inducible adhesion molecules intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), and E-selectin.

Results: Vessels in 6/7 SLE biopsy specimens with perivascular infiltrates expressed VCAM-1 at a density of > 2 vessels/mm2 in contrast with 0/7 SLE biopsy specimens without infiltrates and 1/6 control specimens.

Based on incident cases of small intestinal cancers in the four western Canadian provinces reported in the population-based cancer registries of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba we evaluated the descriptive epidemiological characteristics such as age, sex and subsite distribution of adenocarcinomas, carcinoids, lymphomas and sarcomas for the period 1975-1989. The distribution of adenocarcinomas, carcinoids and lymphomas presented a clear trend along the length of the small bowel. Most of the adenocarcinomas (54.

The expression of epidermal growth factor receptor was determined in a series of 88 patients with glioblastoma multiforme using a monoclonal antibody to the receptor. Positive staining was seen in 17 patients but this did not have prognostic significance when compared with known clinical prognostic factors using a computer model. The significance of receptor expression in these tumours is discussed.

A series of 100 consecutive orbitotomies for tumour was assessed. Lymphoid infiltrations contributed 27% and malignant non-Hodgkin lymphoma was the commonest primary malignant orbital tumour in this series. The clinical and histological features of the first histologically proven case of primary orbital Castleman's disease are reported, as are the results of a study of 27 patients with pure orbital lymphoid infiltrations.

We calculated relative survival rates from 5 to 15 years after diagnosis for cancer cases diagnosed in Saskatchewan, Canada, between 1967 and 1986. Cancers with high 15-year relative survival (greater than 60%) included lip, melanoma among women, other male genital sites, and corpus uteri. As anticipated, relative survival rates declined with increasing length of follow-up, with the largest relative declines noted among those in the oldest age group (65+ years).

A retrospective questionnaire was conducted as to the risk factors for facial skin cancer with emphasis on acne and past treatments for acne, in particular use of benzoyl peroxide preparations. The response rate was 90.9% for 964 cases and 79.

The in vitro V79/metabolic cooperation assay measures the extent of gap-junctional transfer of metabolites from wild-type to mutant V79 cells. The assay is currently being explored as a short-term test to screen for tumor promoting chemicals, many of which inhibit metabolic cooperation. In this study, the assay was used to determine whether chemical interactions affect detection of tumor promoters in mixtures and to investigate types of interactions that may occur between chemicals.

Three-month recovery rates from moderate wasting (less than 90% weight-for-length) were compared in 6-24-mo-old children in four Guatemalan villages that had been randomly assigned to receive a moderate (Atole) or low (Fresco) energy supplement. The recovery rate (Rr) in the Atole villages was 12% higher than in the Fresco villages (P less than 0.05).

A case of Whipple's disease, initially presenting with abdominal symptoms and later with neurological manifestations, is reported. The diagnosis was not made in life, but on post-mortem examination of the brain. This case emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of this uncommon disorder.

Evaluation of the responsiveness of weight and length to supplementary feeding shows that the two periods of greatest response coincide with weaning (ages 3-6 mo) and peak incidence and duration of diarrheal disease (ages 9-12 mo). Analyses were done for seven consecutive nonoverlapping intervals comparing children randomly assigned to receive supplemental feeding from birth to age 36 mo or to serve as control subjects. Absolute responsiveness was greatest between ages 3-6 mo; supplemented infants grew 0.

The cellular distribution of the lysosomal proteinase cathepsin D was studied in a series of 76 neoplasms and 18 non-neoplastic tissues from the human central nervous system, using a well-characterized polyclonal antibody in a peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique. In the normal and developing brain, cathepsin D is confined to neurons and choroid plexus epithelium. Strong granular cytoplasmic staining was present in neuronal and choroid plexus neoplasms, and in reactive macrophages.

Proliferation and differentiation of B cells has been extensively studied and the study of feedback suppression of B cell proliferation has been limited to humoral factors. However, very little is known about feedback suppression of B cell proliferation by cellular influences. We have previously reported on the role of T cells and their subsets on B cell proliferation in that we did not observe suppression of B cell colony growth by T cells.
