  • Researchers collected 4 freckled madtoms from a creek in Arkansas to study their organs for the presence of myxozoans during specific months in 2021, 2022, and 2023.
  • Of the collected fish, 1 was found to have a novel myxozoan infection in its gallbladder, making it a 25% infection rate among the sample size.
  • The study included detailed morphological and molecular analysis, revealing new findings about myxozoans and their relationship with fish in southern North America, marking the first time these organisms have been reported in madtoms' gallbladders.

Helmets and shoulder pads are required equipment intended to protect American football athletes by attenuating collision forces during participation. Surprisingly, research differentiating kinematics from head impacts initiated by helmets from those initiated by shoulder pads among adolescent athletes has not been completed. The current study's purpose was to determine the effects of equipment on head impact kinematics.

During May 2022 and again in March 2023, 5 quillbacks, Carpiodes cyprinus, were collected from the Verdigris River, Wagoner County, Oklahoma (n = 1), and the Black River, Lawrence County, Arkansas (n = 4), and their gill, gallbladder, fins, integument, musculature, and other major organs were macroscopically examined for myxozoans. Gill lamellae from the single quillback from the Verdigris River was infected with a new myxozoan, Thelohanellus oklahomaensis n. sp.

Objective: To document the performance of first-year pharmacy students on a revised objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) based on national entrustable professional activities, identify risk factors for poor performance, and assess its validity and reliability.

Methods: A working group developed the OSCE to verify students' progress toward readiness for advanced pharmacy practice experiences at the L1 level of entrustment (ready for thoughtful observation) on the national entrustable professional activities, with stations cross-mapped to the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education educational outcomes. Baseline characteristics and academic performance were used to investigate risk factors for poor performance and validity, respectively, by comparing students who were successful on the first attempt with those who were not.

Objectives: This study examined the effects of a combination corticosteroid plus long-acting beta -adrenergic agonist inhaler (IC) on rabbit phonation.

Methods: White New Zealand male rabbits were assigned randomly to experimental and control groups (n = 11 per group). The experimental group received twice-daily doses of Advair HFA™ (fluticasone propionate 45 mcg and salmeterol 21 mcg) via a veterinary facemask with 1-way valve and spacer; the control group received aerosolized saline.

Article Synopsis
  • The southern striped shiner, Luxilus chrysocephalus isolepis, is a large minnow collected from various watersheds in Arkansas for a study on myxozoan infections.
  • A new species of myxozoan, Myxobolus carlhubbsi n. sp., was identified in 34% of the sampled fish, particularly in Sevier County, showing specific symptoms in the gills.
  • The study provides morphological and molecular analysis of this parasite, with findings registered in the Official Register of Zoological Nomenclature, marking the first report of a myxozoan in this fish species.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the rates and causes of lateral ankle sprains in NCAA sports from the 2014-15 to 2018-19 seasons to assess the injury's impact and guide prevention strategies.
  • A total of 3,910 sprains were reported, with the highest incidence in men's basketball, and competition events posing a significantly higher risk than practices.
  • Nearly half of the sprains resulted in time loss, and the majority were caused by player contact, indicating potential areas for targeted prevention efforts.*

Article Synopsis
  • - Between November 2018 and December 2021, researchers studied 35 Western Creek Chubsuckers from Arkansas, examining various organs for infections by myxozoans.
  • - A new species of myxozoan, named Myxobolus stuartae n. sp., was discovered in the fins of 34% of the chubsuckers, with detailed morphological and molecular data collected.
  • - Phylogenetic analysis showed that the new species is closely related to Myxobolus bibullatus and is the first documented fin-infecting myxozoan in Western Creek Chubsuckers.

Introduction: The objective was to use the evidence-based medicine metrics of number needed to treat, number needed to harm, and likelihood to be helped or harmed to appraise the clinical efficacy and tolerability of sublingual dexmedetomidine in adults with agitation associated with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.

Methods: Sublingual dexmedetomidine data for this post hoc analysis were obtained from two similarly designed, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled studies of adults with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Response to treatment was defined as a ≥ 40% reduction from baseline in the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale-Excited Component (PEC).

Sport-related concussion (SRC) is a complex injury, and SRCs are notably prevalent among National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athletes. We analysed SRCs and associated exposure data collected within the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program during 2014-2019. A total of 1,709 SRCs were reported with complete symptom profiles during the study period (Women's sports n = 499; Men's sports n = 1,210).

Context: With 8 million annual US high school student-athletes, the epidemiology of sport-related injuries has garnered significant interest. The most recent studies examining overuse injury rates in high school sports were based on data from 2012 to 2013 and, therefore, may not reflect current overuse injury rates in high school sports.

Objective: To (1) determine overuse time-loss (TL) and non-time-loss (NTL) injury rates among high school student-athletes using National Athletic Treatment, Injury and Outcomes Network Surveillance Program (NATION-SP) data collected from 2014-2015 to 2018-2019 and (2) compare overuse injury rates based on student-athlete sex defined by whether it was a boys' sport or a girls' sport, the sport itself, and the injury location.

Context: Volleyball is a popular sport with a risk of injury to the entire body. Insight into non-time-loss (NTL) and time-loss (TL) injuries is needed to inform seasonal injury trends that may lead to appropriate prevention and management strategies. This study provides a descriptive analysis of volleyball injuries among secondary school athletes.

Accurate detection and risk stratification of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) remains a major clinical and public health problem. We hypothesize that multiparameter strategies that probe immune responses to Mycobacterium tuberculosis can provide new diagnostic insights into not only the status of LTBI infection, but also the risk of reactivation. After the initial proof-of-concept study, we developed a 13-plex immunoassay panel to profile cytokine release from peripheral blood mononuclear cells stimulated separately with Mtb-relevant and non-specific antigens to identify putative biomarker signatures.

Context: Socioeconomic status (SES) is a significant predictor of morbidity and mortality across health outcomes. Limited information exists on how school SES affects athletic training practice when a certified athletic trainer (AT) is present at secondary schools.

Objective: To describe contact frequencies and service rates provided by ATs for injuries among secondary school student-athletes and how these differ by school SES.
