Background: Previous studies have reported a hyperinflation of saline-filled breast implants. On removal, the implant fluid had changed from clear saline to a yellowish-brown color, with a viscous consistency similar to serum.
Objective: Our objective was to identify further the components of saline from implants that had undergone spontaneous autoinflation.
A study of part-time nurses in three London trusts found that they were concentrated in lower grades and less likely to be involved in management than full-time nurses. While senior managers in the trusts were fully committed to flexible working, managers lower in the organisation felt that part-time working presented problems for continuity of care, and that part-time nurses were unwilling to work unsocial hours. A more strategic approach is needed to ensure that part-time nurses are employed most effectively at a time of acute nursing shortages.

We report several occurrences of a potentially dangerous interaction between a continuous veno-venous hemodialysis (CVVHD) system and an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) counterpulsation device in four patients requiring both systems. The patients had acute renal failure in the face of multi-organ failure and were dependent upon the balloon pump for pressure support.

At exploration one breast implant was seen to be markedly enlarged when compared to the other, with a brownish yellow material that had the consistency of serum. Studies were undertaken to determine the permeability of the silicone container to various body fluids and a study of the contained fluid itself.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of mineral oil on the urothelium. Twelve adult female farm pigs underwent bilateral ureteral catheter placement under general endotracheal anesthesia.

Sequence comparison with Genbank and of the corresponding amino acid sequence with the NBRF/PIR data bank using the FastA program, showed homologies between 54.

This article summarises the results in the 42 evaluable patients (14 males, 28 females); 10 patients with enteric fever, 2 patients with salmonellosis; 12 patients with biliary tract sepsis, and 18 patients with other Gram-negative infections. Overall, 86% of the patients were clinically cured or improved.

No intertype differences in bacteriolysis of these two serotypes were observed among leukocytes from newborns or adults. As group, only polymorphonuclear phagocytes from newborns disclosed a significantly lower mean bactericidal capacity than their adult cellular counterpart, and only with respect to GBBHS-III-SS-620/50.

Large-scale production and concentration procedures have been standardized to study the biological properties of Rauscher leukemia virus produced from the high-passaged JLS-V9-H mouse bone marrow cell line. Virus produced early (days 4 to 6) in the harvest and refeed cycle contained higher levels of ribonucleic acid-directed deoxyribonucleic acid polymerase activity and was more infectious than Rauscher leukemia virus produced later (days 7 to 10) in the growth period. The peak of virus production as detected by physical assays (virus particle count, protein, and p30 antigen) was highest at day 6, whereas the optimum biological and ribonucleic acid-directed deoxyribonucleic acid polymerase activity occurred 24 h earlier.

A system for the large-scale production and purification of mouse mammary tumor virus in the absence of detectable endogenous murine leukemia virus is described. By utilizing the Mm5mt/c1 cell line established from an adenocarcinoma of a C3H mouse, the continuous production of over 25,000 liters of mouse mammary tumor virus-containing tissue culture fluids has been achieved. By the strict adherence to well-defined tissue culture conditions, mammary tumor virus production was accomplished without the expression of murine leukemia virus.

JLS-V9, a mouse bone marrow cell line infected with Rauscher leukemia virus at high passage level, produced larger amounts of virus than the standard JLS-V10 cells. The enhanced virus production was attributed to the increased saturation density of JLS-V9 cells.

The Experiment Start-Up System (ESS) developed and implemented at the National Center for Toxicological Research constructs models from information contained in experimental protocols. These models may then be used to project resource requirements and related schedules. Each experimental model provides information from which management can determine the raw resources such as quantity of food, water, bedding, cages, animals (sex, strain, species), chemical, facilities, and manpower needed for conducting the experiment.

Although the over-all incidence of side-effects was similar with both preparations, diarrhoea was significantly reduced in talampicillin-treated patients. Possible reasons for this are discussed.

Rauscher murine leukemia virus was produced in roller-bottle cultures of chronically infected JLS-V9 cells. Virus from this culture fluid was concentrated and purified by two semi-isopycnic bandings in sucrose gradients. Virus material obtained from young, nonconfluent cultures (early-harvest virus) yielded products characteristically containing endogenous ribonucleic acid-dependent deoxyribonucleic acid polymerase with high specific activity (400 to 1,000 pmol of [3H]thymidine 5'-triphosphate incorporated per milligram of protein per hour).
