Prototype Analysis in Hopfield Networks With Hebbian Learning.

We discuss prototype formation in the Hopfield network. Typically, Hebbian learning with highly correlated states leads to degraded memory performance. We show that this type of learning can lead to prototype formation, where unlearned states emerge as representatives of large correlated subsets of states, alleviating capacity woes.

Collaborative wildlife disease outbreak investigation and response at Bells Swamp Victoria, February 2023.

In February 2023, a report of morbidity and mortality in waterbirds triggered a collaborative regional wildlife disease outbreak investigation and response, led by Parks Victoria. Triage, rehabilitation and diagnosis of sick and dead birds were undertaken by Zoos Victoria (ZV), Agriculture Victoria, Vets for Compassion, Wildlife Victoria and Melbourne Veterinary School (MVS). The field response focused on collection of sick and dead birds for wildlife welfare, for diagnosis, and to reduce environmental contamination.

A Gaussian-plume based Monte Carlo method for calculating radiation dose in the near field of buildings.

A Monte Carlo (MC) programme was written using the dose point kernel method to calculate doses in the roof zone of a building from nearby releases of radioactive gases. A Gaussian Plume Model (GPM) was parameterised to account for near-field building effects on plume spread and reflection from the roof. Rooftop recirculation zones and building-generated plume spread effects were accounted in a novel Dual Gaussian Plume (DGP) formulation used with the MC model, which allowed for the selection of angle of approach flow, plume release height in relation to the building and position of the release point in relation to the leading edge of the building.

A geospatial analysis of accessibility and availability to implement the primary healthcare roadmap in Ethiopia.

Background: Primary healthcare (PHC) is a crucial strategy for achieving universal health coverage. Ethiopia is working to improve its primary healthcare system through the Optimization of Health Extension Program (OHEP), which aims to increase accessibility, availability and performance of health professionals and services. Measuring current accessibility of healthcare facilities and workforce availability is essential for the success of the OHEP and achieving universal health coverage in the country.

Factors associated with spontaneous vaginal birth in nulliparous women: A descriptive systematic review.

Problem: Spontaneous vaginal birth (SVB) rates for nulliparous women are declining internationally.

Background: There is inadequate understanding of factors affecting this trend overall and limited large-scale responses to improve women's opportunity to birth spontaneously.

Aim: To undertake a descriptive systematic review identifying factors associated with spontaneous vaginal birth at term, in nulliparous women with a singleton pregnancy.

The Effect of High-Intensity Interval Exercise on Short-Term Glycaemic Control, Serum Level of Key Mediator in Hypoxia and Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines in Patients with Type 1 Diabetes-An Exploratory Case Study.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is associated with hyperglycaemia-induced hypoxia and inflammation. This study assessed the effects of a single bout of high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) on glycaemia (BG) and serum level of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and an essential mediator of adaptive response to hypoxia in T1D patients. The macronutrient intake was also evaluated.

Mapping the effects of ozone pollution and mixing on floral odour plumes and their impact on plant-pollinator interactions.

The critical ecological process of animal-mediated pollination is commonly facilitated by odour cues. These odours consist of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), often with short chemical lifetimes, which form the strong concentration gradients necessary for pollinating insects to locate a flower. Atmospheric oxidants, including ozone pollution, may react with and chemically alter these VOCs, impairing the ability of pollinators to locate a flower, and therefore the pollen and nectar on which they feed.

Barriers to Healthy Family Dinners and Preventing Child Obesity: Focus Group Discussions with Parents of 5-to-8-Year-Old Children.

Background: Although numerous physical and mental health benefits for children have been linked to family dinners, many families still do not have regular family meals together. This study sought to identify the barriers that keep families from having dinners together.

Methods: We interviewed 42 parents of 5-to-8-year-old children in small focus groups to identify barriers and challenges that keep families from having healthy and consistent dinners together.

We aim to fully describe the spatio-temporal variability of exposures of pedestrians and cyclists travelling along a road at high resolution.

The Association between COVID-19 and Changes in Opioid Prescribing Patterns and Opioid-Related Overdoses: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background: Recent data suggest that restrictions related to COVID-19 resulted in changes in the prescribing patterns of opioids.

Aims: We sought to analyze Ontario health data for changes in frequencies among new and continuing users for the following opioid prescription characteristics: the type of opioid, the average daily dose, and the prescriber's specialty.

Methods: Utilizing data on the Ontario Health Data Platform, we defined two 149-day windows as "before" and "after" based on the initial COVID-19 provincial lockdown.

Non-financial Incentives for Retention of Health Extension Workers in Somali Region of Ethiopia: A Discrete Choice Experiment.

The study evaluated non-financial incentive packages to retain health extension workers in the Somali Region of Ethiopia using the Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE) technique, conducted among 66 health extension workers in 3 (districts). The study used a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods in sequential order. Mixed logic regression modeling was used to determine the effect of different job attributes on the retention of the health extension workers, while Preference Impact Measure (PIM) was used to determine the combinations of preferred incentive packages to retain the health extension workers in their current workplace.

Determinants of nutrition practice and food choice in UK construction workers.

The workplace is considered an effective setting for health and wellbeing interventions, including programmes focusing on nutrition, and provides opportunities to tailor programmes to meet the specific needs of industry and employees. This study explored nutrition practices amongst construction workers and managers to inform the design of a nutrition intervention. Five focus groups were conducted on three construction sites: two with managers (n = 11) and three with workers (n = 27).

Contributions by metaplasticity to solving the Catastrophic Forgetting Problem.

Catastrophic forgetting (CF) refers to the sudden and severe loss of prior information in learning systems when acquiring new information. CF has been an Achilles heel of standard artificial neural networks (ANNs) when learning multiple tasks sequentially. The brain, by contrast, has solved this problem during evolution.

Hepatitis E case series: A UK experience.

The incidence of hepatitis E continues to increase and in immunocompromised patients can lead to chronic infection. Management of hepatitis E has evolved over time, with the first step being a reduction of immunosuppression followed by treatment with ribavirin. The European Association for the Study of Liver guidelines support treatment with ribavirin although the optimum dose and regime is unknown.

Increasing capacity to address the physical health needs of patients in a mental health and addictions hospital.

Purpose: This paper describes the strategy and outcomes of a quality improvement initiative focused on building the capacity of nurses at a mental health and addictions teaching hospital to provide an improved standard of physical health care. Education was provided via a series of e-learning modules and interactive workshops. To reinforce the education and enhance practice change, improvements were made to electronic documentation templates and organizational standards.

Leprosy of the great auricular nerve: case report and review of the literature.

We report clinical, imaging and pathology findings of a patient with leprosy of the great auricular nerve who presented with palpable nodules and numbness of the left ear and scalp. Ultrasound and contrast-enhanced CT imaging of the neck demonstrated diffuse enlargement and enhancement of the great auricular nerve. Biopsy of the enlarged left great auricular nerve revealed granulomatous inflammation with necrosis involving the nerve with rare Fite-positive organisms compatible with mycobacterium.

Improving the safety of outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy for patients with solid tumors.

Background And Objectives: Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) for infections has been in use for nearly 40 years, and although it has been found safe and efficacious, its use has been studied primarily among otherwise healthy patients. We aimed to develop and evaluate an OPAT program for patients with cancer, particularly solid tumors.

Methods: We implemented multiple quality improvement interventions between June 2018 and January 2020.

Lateralized motor behaviour in the righting responses of the cane toad ().

This paper reports a series of tests for fore- and hind-limb preferences used by cane toads, , to assist returning to the righted position after being overturned. We confirm the strong and significant right-handedness reported in this species, which under certain conditions exceeded 90% right-hand preference at the group level. Toads were tested under a variety of conditions including horizontal and inclined surfaces, with and without the opportunity for the forelimbs to grasp a support, in order to assess the effects of different vestibular and proprioceptive input on the strength and direction of fore- and hind-limb preferences.

Variability of physical meteorology in urban areas at different scales: implications for air quality.

Air quality in cities is influenced not only by emissions and chemical transformations but also by the physical state of the atmosphere which varies both temporally and spatially. Increasingly, tall buildings (TB) are common features of the urban landscape, yet their impact on urban air flow and dispersion is not well understood, and their effects are not appropriately captured in parameterisation schemes. Here, hardware models of areas within two global mega-cities (London and Beijing) are used to analyse the impact of TB on flow and transport in isolated and cluster settings.

A Comparison of a Direct Electron Detector and a High-Speed Video Camera for a Scanning Precession Electron Diffraction Phase and Orientation Mapping.

A scanning precession electron diffraction system has been integrated with a direct electron detector to allow the collection of improved quality diffraction patterns. This has been used on a two-phase α–β titanium alloy (Timetal® 575) for phase and orientation mapping using an existing pattern-matching algorithm and has been compared to the commonly used detector system, which consisted of a high-speed video-camera imaging the small phosphor focusing screen. Noise is appreciably lower with the direct electron detector, and this is especially noticeable further from the diffraction pattern center where the real electron scattering is reduced and both diffraction spots and inelastic scattering between spots are weaker.

Moderate intensity exercise in hypoxia increases IGF-1 bioavailability and serum irisin in individuals with type 1 diabetes.

Aim: This study aimed to determine the effect of moderate intensity continuous exercise (Ex) and hypoxia (Hyp) on serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and its binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3), irisin and cytokines levels in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Disseminated cytomegalovirus infection with bilateral adrenal pseudotumors masquerading as recurrent hematologic malignancy.

Background: Mass-like lesions are an uncommon presentation of cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease.

Case: We report on a case of disseminated CMV disease with bilateral adrenal pseudotumors in a patient with a history of acute leukemia in remission.

Conclusion: In the settings of advanced cancer therapy and organ transplantation, a high index of suspicion for CMV should be maintained for mass-like disease.

Prevalence and predictors of underweight and stunting among children under 2 years of age in Eastern Kenya.

Objective: To investigate key risk factors associated with undernutrition in the first few years of life.

Design: A cross-sectional household survey was conducted in January 2018 collecting anthropometric data and other information on household, caregiver and child characteristics. Crude and adjusted odds ratios were calculated to assess the association of these characteristics with stunting and underweight outcomes.
