While using data standards can facilitate research by making it easier to share data, manually mapping to data standards creates an obstacle to their adoption. Semi-automated mapping strategies can reduce the manual mapping burden. Machine learning approaches, such as artificial neural networks, can predict mappings between clinical data standards but are limited by the need for training data.

ISO 11179 Common Data Elements (CDEs) represent one such standard that provides robust data point definitions. Another standard is the Biomedical Research Integrated Domain Group (BRIDG) model, which is a domain analysis model that provides a contextual framework for biomedical and clinical research data.
