Carbon steel coupons were buried in a specific low-pH cement grout designed for radioactive waste disposal and left 6 months in anoxic conditions at 80 °C. The corrosion product layers were analyzed by µ-Raman spectroscopy, XRD, and SEM. They proved to be mainly composed of iron sulfides, with magnetite as a minor phase, mixed with components of the grout.

Natural rhamnolipids are potential biocontrol agents for plant protection against bacterial and fungal diseases. In this work, we synthetized new synthetic mono-rhamnolipids (smRLs) consisting in a rhamnose connected to a simple acyl chain and differing by the nature of the link and the length of the lipid tail. We then investigated the effects of these ether, ester, carbamate or succinate smRL derivatives on development, symptoms spreading on tomato leaves and immune responses in tomato plants.

Aims: The study aimed for evaluate the efficacy of Pseudomonas knackmussii MLR6 on growth promotion, photosynthetic responses, pigment contents and gene expression of the plant model Arabidopsis thaliana under NaCl stress.

Methods And Results: The strain MLR6 was isolated from the rhizopshere of the halophyte Salsola tetrandra collected from a natural saline Algerian soil. Results showed the ability of MLR6 to induce plant growth promoting traits even under NaCl stress.

In order to find biological control agents (BCAs) for the management of Fusarium head blight (FHB), a major disease on wheat crops worldwide, 86 microorganisms isolated from inner tissues of wheat plants were discriminated for their ability to inhibit the growth of Fusarium graminearum and Fusarium culmorum by in vitro dual culture assays. A group of 22 strains appeared very effective to inhibit F. graminearum (inhibition of 30-51%) and they were also globally effective in controlling F.

Trivalent inorganic arsenic [As(III)] is an efficient anticancer agent used to treat patients suffering from acute promyelocytic leukemia. Recently, experimental studies have clearly demonstrated that this metalloid can also cure lymphoproliferative and/or pro-inflammatory syndromes in different murine models of chronic immune-mediated diseases. T helper (Th) 1 and Th17 lymphocytes play a central role in development of these diseases, in mice and humans, especially by secreting the potent pro-inflammatory cytokine interferon-γ and IL-17A, respectively.

A 78-year-old woman developed an early knee-prosthesis infection due to multiresistant Serratia marcescens that was successfully treated with high-dose meropenem, after failure of a long-term therapy combining imipenem and multiple surgical interventions. Because of its lower neurotoxicity, meropenem might be preferred to imipenem/cilastatin for the treatment of osteo-articular infections due to multiresistant Gram-negative bacilli in the elderly.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute vasculitis characterized by marked tropism of the coronary vessels. Usually a childhood disease, KD can occasionally be observed in adults. We report a case of adult-onset KD that presented as a prolonged fever of unknown origin with subsequent development of severe vasculitis, manifested by coronary aneurysms and peripheral gangrene of the lower limbs.

Plasma and cervicovaginal secretion (CVS) samples were collected from 19 human immunodeficiency virus type 1-infected women on lopinavir- or indinavir-containing regimens. Lopinavir and indinavir were detectable in 29 and 93% of CVS samples, respectively, a finding that may be ascribed to these drugs' differences in protein binding and pK(a). The relationship between lopinavir and indinavir pharmacodynamics and viral evolution in the female genital tract should be assessed over time.

Myocardial involvement in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is well established on clinical data, echocardiographic studies, macropathological findings and histological studies on autopsy or endomyocardial biopsy specimens. The condition may present with asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction with a low ejection fraction, acute or subacute myocarditis or cardiac failure and dilated cardiomyopathy.
