Although clinical trials should be accessible to all patients, persistent racial and ethnic disparities in clinical trial enrollment exist. Herein, we examine racial disparities in clinical trial enrollment among prostate cancer patients from a large population-based cohort of oncology practices in the United States. Using CancerLinQ Discovery, we identified men with regional (N1+) and/or metastatic (M1) prostate cancer diagnosed from 2011 to 2023.

Purpose: Patients with metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) with progressive disease generally require a change or escalation in systemic therapy. For patients with limited (1-3) sites of progressive disease (oligoprogression), metastasis-directed therapy with stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) may allow a longer interval before next-line systemic therapy.

Methods And Materials: This is a retrospective study of patients with oligoprogressive metastatic CRPC (mCRPC) treated with SBRT at a single center between 2011 and 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • Small cell prostate cancer (SCPC) is a rare, aggressive cancer with limited treatment guidelines, prompting this study to assess patient data and outcomes.
  • The study analyzed 74 patients treated between 2010-2023, finding that most had metastatic disease and the primary treatment was platinum chemotherapy plus etoposide, with a median overall survival of 8.3 months for those with metastatic SCPC.
  • Results showed that cisplatin plus etoposide improved survival over carboplatin plus etoposide, but there is no clear consensus on the best treatment, highlighting the need for further research in real-world clinical practices.

The parasite Toxoplasma gondii, or T. gondii, is zoonotic that both individuals as well as animals can contract resulting in toxoplasmosis, a life-threatening illness. We used an immunoinformatic technique in our research to construct a vaccine with multi-epitopes so that it can decrease the devastating impact caused by this dangerous parasite.

We investigated the influence of the photobleaching (PB) effect on the dosimetry performances of a phosphosilicate single-mode optical fiber (core diameter of 6.6 µm) operated at 638 nm, within the framework of the LUMINA project. Different irradiation tests were performed under ~40 keV mean energy fluence X-rays at a 530 µ Gy(SiO)/s dose rate to measure in situ the radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) growth and decay kinetics while injecting a 638 nm laser diode source with powers varying from 500 nW to 1 mW.

Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) virus and some related poxviruses including smallpox virus pose a significant threat to public health, and effective prevention and treatment strategies are needed. This study utilized a reverse vaccinology approach to retrieve conserved epitopes for monkeypox virus and construct a vaccine that could provide cross-protection against related viruses with similar antigenic properties. The selected virulent proteins of monkeypox virus, MPXVgp165, and Virion core protein P4a, were subjected to epitope mapping for vaccine construction.

Introduction: To investigate the actual cost of hematuria evaluation using nationally representative claims data, given that the workup for hematuria burdens the healthcare system with significant associated costs. We hypothesized that evaluation with contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) confers more cost to hematuria evaluation than renal ultrasound (US).

Methods: Using a national, privately insured database (MarketScan), we identified all individuals with an incident diagnosis of hematuria.

Purpose: Positional errors resulting from motion are a principal challenge across all disease sites in radiation therapy. This is particularly pertinent when treating lesions in the liver with stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). To achieve dose escalation and margin reduction for liver SBRT, kV real-time imaging interventions may serve as a potential solution.

Mathematical models are a valuable tool for studying and predicting the spread of infectious agents. The accuracy of model simulations and predictions invariably depends on the specification of model parameters. Estimation of these parameters is therefore extremely important; however, while some parameters can be derived from observational studies, the values of others are difficult to measure.

We have developed an ultra-low noise tunable Brillouin fiber laser exhibiting three orders of magnitude better frequency noise performance than the Neodymium-doped fiber laser pump and remarkable optical signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 80 dB suitable for immediate applications in coherent nonlinear conversion, quantum computing and underwater communications. In addition, we have implemented a custom optical phase-locked loop to ensure long-term stable operation and have investigated its impact on frequency noise. We demonstrate the power scalability of the single frequency (Hz-class) Brillouin laser, delivering over 500 mW with tunability across the 900 nm to 930 nm range in an all-fiber fully polarization-maintaining architecture.

Many Canadian universities have committed to becoming more accountable to Indigenous Peoples by confronting the systemic, historical, and ongoing colonialism and anti-Indigenous racism that shape their campuses. In this Perspective in Practice piece, we invite the field of dietetics to consider how colonialism has shaped dietetics research, teaching, and practice. We also consider how we might transform the field of dietetics in ways that accept settler responsibility for interrupting racism and colonial harm; support the resurgence of Indigenous food and health practices; and recognise the connections between struggles to ensure that Indigenous Peoples can access culturally appropriate food and health care, and struggles for Indigenous sovereignty and self-determination.

Human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV), a group of retroviruses belonging to the oncovirus family, has long been associated with various inflammatory and immunosuppressive disorders. At present, there is no approved vaccine capable of effectively combating all the highly pathogenic strains of HTLV that makes this group of viruses a potential threat to human health. To combat the devastating impact of any potential future outbreak caused by this virus group, our study employed a reverse vaccinology approach to design a novel polyvalent vaccine targeting the highly virulent subtypes of HTLV.
