Background: There is a paucity of data on the association of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) with intracranial aneurysms. It is an important clinical entity for physicians to be aware of and its presence illustrates several critical features of the pathophysiology of malignant glioma. In this article we present a case of a middle cerebral artery (MCA) pseudoaneurysm that occurred in a patient with recurrent GBM as well discuss the current literature relating to this unique combination of pathologies.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers have identified a new subset of CD8(+) T cells in humans that share characteristics with a type found in mice, showing features like high Eomes expression and rapid IFN-γ production without prior exposure to antigens.
  • These KIR/NKG2A(+) CD8(+) T cells demonstrate potent antigen-independent cytotoxic activity and possess a terminally differentiated effector memory phenotype.
  • The findings suggest that these T cells may represent a distinct "innate/memory-like" functional group in humans, which was also observed in cord blood, indicating their development doesn't rely on prior antigen exposure.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine if patient demographic factors influenced self-reporting of medication side effects, difficulty with drop instillation, and nonadherence to glaucoma therapy.

Methods: English-speaking adult glaucoma patients (n = 279) from six ophthalmology clinics were enrolled. Patients' medical visits were videotaped and patients were interviewed immediately afterward by research assistants.

The authors report a case of a 49-year-old man with long-standing, chronic cluster headache (CH) refractory to medical therapy and occipital nerve stimulation that resolved a few weeks prior to the diagnosis of glioblastoma involving primarily the right cingulate gyrus. An attempt to explore the underlying role of the cingulate cortex in pain modulation by appraising the current literature is presented. This report suggests that the cingulate gyri could be a potential target for neuromodulation in patients with medically refractory chronic CH.

Background: The study investigated if intraoperative use of carmustine wafers, particularly in combination with Stupp regimen, is a viable and safe first-line treatment option of glioblastomas.

Methods: Eighty-three consecutive adult patients (50 men; mean age 60 years) with newly diagnosed supratentorial primary glioblastomas that underwent surgical resection with intraoperative carmustine wafers implantation (n = 7.1 ± 1.

Interparticle charge hopping severely limits the integration of colloidal nanocrystals films for optoelectronic device applications. We propose here to overcome this problem by using high aspect ratio interconnects made of wide electrodes separated by a few tens of namometers, a distance matching the size of a single nanoplatelet. The semiconducting CdSe/CdS nanoplatelet coupling with such electrodes allows an efficient electron-hole pair dissociation despite the large binding energy of the exciton, resulting in optimal photoconductance responsivity.

Objective: To examine the associations of provider-patient communication, glaucoma medication adherence self-efficacy, and outcome expectations with glaucoma medication adherence.

Design: Prospective, observational cohort study.

Participants: Two hundred seventy-nine patients with glaucoma who were newly prescribed or taking glaucoma medications were recruited at 6 ophthalmology clinics.

Purpose: To determine how receptive patients are to the use of e-mail and text message reminders for appointments and medications.

Methods: We conducted a consecutive cross-sectional survey of eligible patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension at a private glaucoma subspecialty practice with 3 locations from February 2011 to January 2012. Main outcome measures were answers to survey questions regarding how receptive patients are to e-mail and text messaging reminders for appointments and medications.

Family therapy for adolescents with ADHD.

Child Adolesc Psychiatr Clin N Am

October 2014

Adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and their parents experience a great deal of conflict and coercion because the executive function deficits of ADHD interact with the parents' characteristics, family stress, and parenting practices. This article provides a step-by-step description of the defiant teen approach to family therapy, which is designed to help adolescents with ADHD and their parents reduce conflict and coercion. The article also summarizes 2 studies supporting the effectiveness of the defiant teen approach.

Apoptotic stimuli activate and oligomerize the proapoptotic proteins Bak and Bax, resulting in mitochondrial outer-membrane permeabilization and subsequent cell death. This activation can occur when certain BH3-only proteins interact directly with Bak and Bax. Recently published crystal structures reveal that Bax separates into core and latch domains in response to BH3 peptides.

We applied the ecologic model of communication in medical consultations to examine how patient, physician, and situational/contextual factors are associated with whether patients ask one or more questions about glaucoma and glaucoma medications during visits to ophthalmologists. Patients with glaucoma who were newly prescribed or already on glaucoma medications were recruited at six ophthalmology clinics. Patients' visits with their doctors were video-recorded and patients were interviewed after visits.

Since the founding of the Tumor Section of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) in 1984 much in neurosurgical oncology has changed. More than 40,000 papers have been published on glioma since the arrival of the AANS/CNS Tumor Section. Increasingly, research is focusing on more patient-centered care and quality of life.

The Joint Section on Tumors of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons is now in its 30th year. In many ways its growth and development has paralleled neurosurgery and medicine as a whole. This is most evident in our endeavor towards more patient-centered care and focus on quantity and quality of life.

Article Synopsis
  • Duplication of the gene is linked to normal tension glaucoma (NTG), but the exact process leading to retinal ganglion cell death is unclear.
  • The use of skin-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) allows researchers to study the effects of the mutant gene on retinal cells, which are not easily accessible for direct study.
  • Analysis of iPSCs derived from NTG patients reveals increased levels of LC3-II protein, suggesting that the gene duplication may cause glaucoma through an overactive autophagy pathway.

Colloidal nanocrystals are appealing candidates for low cost optoelectronic applications because they can combine the advantages of both organic materials, such as their easy processing, and the excellent performance of inorganic systems. Here, we report the use of two-dimensional colloidal nanoplatelets for photodetection. We show that the nanoplatelets photoresponse can be enhanced by two to three orders of magnitude when they are incorporated in an all solid electrolyte-gated phototransistor.

Congenital hyperinsulinism (CHI) is a rare metabolic disease characterized by inappropriate insulin secretion in the presence of hypoglycemia. We describe the clinical presentation and management of congenital hyperinsulinism and persistent hypoglycemia in two infants. Both patients had an initial clinical diagnosis of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) but normal methylation analysis for LIT1 and H19 status.

Objectives: The objective of this study is to present a novel surgical technique for safe placement of paddle-type spinal cord stimulation (SCS) electrode in the presence of epidural scar tissue.

Materials And Methods: We developed a new surgical technique for placement of paddle-type SCS electrode in presence of epidural scar tissue when conventional placement methods had failed. The technique involves creating a laminotomy trough to provide an adequate window for dissection of scar tissue to ensure safe placement of the electrode.

Global blindness exacts an enormous financial and social cost on developing countries. Reducing the prevalence of blindness globally requires a set of strategies that are different from those typically used in developed countries. This was the subject of the 2013 Knapp symposium at the American Ophthalmological Society Annual Meeting, and this article summarizes the presentations of epidemiologists, health care planners, and ophthalmologists.
