Glioblastoma and intracranial aneurysms: Case report and review of literature.

Background: There is a paucity of data on the association of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) with intracranial aneurysms. It is an important clinical entity for physicians to be aware of and its presence illustrates several critical features of the pathophysiology of malignant glioma. In this article we present a case of a middle cerebral artery (MCA) pseudoaneurysm that occurred in a patient with recurrent GBM as well discuss the current literature relating to this unique combination of pathologies.

The Most Common Barriers to Glaucoma Medication Adherence: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

Purpose: To evaluate the frequency of 11 commonly cited barriers to optimal glaucoma medication adherence among glaucoma patients and to identify barriers contributing to poor adherence.

Design: Prospective, cross-sectional survey.

Participants: One hundred ninety adults with glaucoma taking 1 or more glaucoma medication who received care in glaucoma clinics in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Baltimore, Maryland.

Glaucoma patient expression of medication problems and nonadherence.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine if patient demographic factors influenced self-reporting of medication side effects, difficulty with drop instillation, and nonadherence to glaucoma therapy.

Methods: English-speaking adult glaucoma patients (n = 279) from six ophthalmology clinics were enrolled. Patients' medical visits were videotaped and patients were interviewed immediately afterward by research assistants.

Further evidence for a pain pathway involving the cingulate gyrus: a case of chronic cluster headache cured by glioblastoma.

The authors report a case of a 49-year-old man with long-standing, chronic cluster headache (CH) refractory to medical therapy and occipital nerve stimulation that resolved a few weeks prior to the diagnosis of glioblastoma involving primarily the right cingulate gyrus. An attempt to explore the underlying role of the cingulate cortex in pain modulation by appraising the current literature is presented. This report suggests that the cingulate gyri could be a potential target for neuromodulation in patients with medically refractory chronic CH.

Combining intraoperative carmustine wafers and Stupp regimen in multimodal first-line treatment of primary glioblastomas.

Nanoplatelets bridging a nanotrench: a new architecture for photodetectors with increased sensitivity.

Interparticle charge hopping severely limits the integration of colloidal nanocrystals films for optoelectronic device applications. We propose here to overcome this problem by using high aspect ratio interconnects made of wide electrodes separated by a few tens of namometers, a distance matching the size of a single nanoplatelet. The semiconducting CdSe/CdS nanoplatelet coupling with such electrodes allows an efficient electron-hole pair dissociation despite the large binding energy of the exciton, resulting in optimal photoconductance responsivity.

Methods: We conducted a consecutive cross-sectional survey of eligible patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension at a private glaucoma subspecialty practice with 3 locations from February 2011 to January 2012. Main outcome measures were answers to survey questions regarding how receptive patients are to e-mail and text messaging reminders for appointments and medications.

Bak core and latch domains separate during activation, and freed core domains form symmetric homodimers.

This activation can occur when certain BH3-only proteins interact directly with Bak and Bax. Recently published crystal structures reveal that Bax separates into core and latch domains in response to BH3 peptides.

We applied the ecologic model of communication in medical consultations to examine how patient, physician, and situational/contextual factors are associated with whether patients ask one or more questions about glaucoma and glaucoma medications during visits to ophthalmologists. Electrolyte-gated colloidal nanoplatelets-based phototransistor and its use for bicolor detection.

Colloidal nanocrystals are appealing candidates for low cost optoelectronic applications because they can combine the advantages of both organic materials, such as their easy processing, and the excellent performance of inorganic systems. Here, we report the use of two-dimensional colloidal nanoplatelets for photodetection. We show that the nanoplatelets photoresponse can be enhanced by two to three orders of magnitude when they are incorporated in an all solid electrolyte-gated phototransistor.

Persistent congenital hyperinsulinism in two patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome due to mosaic uniparental disomy 11p.

Congenital hyperinsulinism (CHI) is a rare metabolic disease characterized by inappropriate insulin secretion in the presence of hypoglycemia. We describe the clinical presentation and management of congenital hyperinsulinism and persistent hypoglycemia in two infants. Both patients had an initial clinical diagnosis of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) but normal methylation analysis for LIT1 and H19 status.

New technique for open placement of paddle-type spinal cord stimulator electrode in presence of epidural scar tissue.

Objectives: The objective of this study is to present a novel surgical technique for safe placement of paddle-type spinal cord stimulation (SCS) electrode in the presence of epidural scar tissue.

Materials And Methods: We developed a new surgical technique for placement of paddle-type SCS electrode in presence of epidural scar tissue when conventional placement methods had failed. The technique involves creating a laminotomy trough to provide an adequate window for dissection of scar tissue to ensure safe placement of the electrode.

Provider use of collaborative goal setting with glaucoma patients.

Purpose: The purpose of this preliminary study was to describe the extent to which providers used collaborative goal setting and individualized assessment with patients who were newly prescribed glaucoma medications.

Methods: English-speaking glaucoma suspect patients from six ophthalmology clinics who were newly prescribed glaucoma medications had their medical visits videotaped and were interviewed after the visits. The videotapes were transcribed and coded to examine provider use of collaborative goal setting and individualized assessment.

TBK1 gene duplication and normal-tension glaucoma.

Importance: Normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) is a common cause of vision loss.

Objective: To investigate the role of TANK binding kinase 1 (TBK1) gene duplications in NTG to gain insights into the causes of glaucoma that occurs at low intraocular pressure (IOP).

Design, Setting, And Participants: In this multicenter case-control study, we investigated patients who met the criteria for NTG, including glaucomatous optic neuropathy, visual field defects, and maximum recorded untreated IOP of 21 mm Hg or less, and matched controls.

Determinants of Self-Reported Barriers to Glaucoma Medicine Administration and Adherence: A Multisite Study.

Background: Many factors influence glaucoma medication adherence. A better understanding of the relationships between health literacy, depressive symptoms, and patient-reported problems in using glaucoma medications may reveal opportunities for intervention that could improve patients' clinical outcomes.

Objective: To examine the relationship between patient characteristics (demographics, health literacy, and depressive symptoms) and patient-reported problems in using glaucoma medications and to assess factors related to patients' self-reported adherence to glaucoma medications.

Challenges of ophthalmic care in the developing world.

Global blindness exacts an enormous financial and social cost on developing countries. Reducing the prevalence of blindness globally requires a set of strategies that are different from those typically used in developed countries. This was the subject of the 2013 Knapp symposium at the American Ophthalmological Society Annual Meeting, and this article summarizes the presentations of epidemiologists, health care planners, and ophthalmologists.
