Cross-sectional Survey of Medical student Attitudes to Research and Training pathways (SMART) in the UK: study protocol.

Background: An understanding and appreciation of scientific research is a key quality of the modern clinician. Yet the Medical Schools Council has previously reported a reduction in the number of clinicians performing research. To explore the reasons for this difficulty, this multicentre, cross-sectional study aims to determine the medical student involvement and perceptions of research and research-orientated careers.

Collagenous gastritis: An unusual cause of generalized oedema in a child.

Collagenous gastritis is an uncommon gastrointestinal disease in children. Its cause remains uncertain. It may present as severe hypoproteinaemia manifesting as generalized oedema.

Endoscopic injection sclerotherapy for bleeding varices in children with intrahepatic and extrahepatic portal venous obstruction: benefit of injection tract embolisation.

Background: The outcome of sclerotherapy for bleeding oesophageal varices may be influenced by injection technique. In a previous study at our institution, sclerotherapy was associated with a high re-bleeding rate and oesophageal ulceration. Embolisation of the injection tract was introduced in an attempt to reduce injection-related complications.

Ectopic thymic tissue presenting as a neck mass in children: a report of 3 cases.

The presentation of ectopic cervical thymic tissue as an anterior neck mass is rare. We report 3 similar cases in 3 boys-2 who had a thymic cyst and 1 who had an ectopic cervical thymus. We discuss the radiographic presentation on ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging in these cases.

Management of congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

Purpose Of Review: To evaluate the impact of recent research on the management of congenital diaphragmatic hernia in the light of new theories on embryological development, earlier antenatal diagnosis, fetal and postnatal interventions together with advances in perinatal intensive care.

Recent Findings: The year 2007 provided in excess of 200 publications that address various aspects of congenital diaphragmatic hernia. The genetic basis and the causes of pulmonary hypoplasia at the molecular level are slowly being unravelled.
