Purpose Of Review: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been in use for thousands of years in Asian countries and is rapidly gaining popularity in the Western world. Among different forms of TCM, the traditional Chinese herbal therapy and acupuncture are the most popular modalities. Breast pain has no association with breast cancer yet is a frequent reason for referral from Primary to Secondary Care, often on an urgent (2-week wait) referral. The referral often causes significant patient anxiety, further heightened by screening mammograms and/or ultrasound scans in the absence of an associated red flag symptom or finding by the patient or general practitioner. This paper reports the pilot implementation of a specialist Primary Care Breast Pain Clinic in Mid-Nottinghamshire where patients were seen, examined without any imaging and assessed for their risk of familial breast cancer: numerous studies have reported 15%->30% of patients with breast pain only have a family history of breast cancer.

Non-typhoidal infections represent a substantial burden of illness in humans, and the increasing prevalence of antimicrobial resistance among these infections is a growing concern. Using a combination of isolate short-read whole-genome sequence data from select human cases, raccoons, livestock and environmental sources, and an epidemiological framework, our objective was to determine if there was evidence for potential transmission of and associated antimicrobial resistance determinants between these different sources in the Grand River watershed in Ontario, Canada. Logistic regression models were used to assess the potential associations between source type and the presence of select resistance genes and plasmid incompatibility types.

A human performance trial was conducted where the stabbing actions of 40 participants were investigated. A range of factors were assessed such as the action used when the blade shape and familiarity of the knife changed. A qualitative evaluation of these factors was presented in an earlier paper to precede the analysis of quantitative kinematic data in this paper.

Detection of seed-based toxins is a need for forensic chemists when suspected poisonings occur. The evidence that is found is often physically unidentifiable, as the seeds are mashed to extract the toxin. This work investigates potential strategies for rapid detection of seed-based toxins and seed mashes containing these toxins using chemical signatures obtained by direct analysis in real time mass spectrometry (DART-MS).

Background: Brain tumor therapeutic responses can be quantified from magnetic resonance images (MRI) using 1- (1D) and 2-dimensional (2D) linear and volumetric methods, but few studies in dogs compare these techniques.

Hypotheses: Linear methods will be obtained faster, but have less agreement than volumetric measurements. Therapeutic response agreement will be highest with the total T2W tumor volumetric (TTV) method.

Background: Surgical errors and resulting adverse events are due to variability in both technical and nontechnical surgical skills. Providing technical and nontechnical skills training to the perioperative team may enhance the learning of both of these skills and promote safe intraoperative patient care.

A urine-based screening technique for Lyme disease (LD) was developed in this research. The screen is based on Raman spectroscopy, iterative smoothing-splines with root error adjustment (ISREA) spectral baselining, and chemometric analysis using Rametrix software. Raman spectra of urine from 30 patients with positive serologic tests (including the US Centers for Disease Control [CDC] two-tier standard) for LD were compared against subsets of our database of urine spectra from 235 healthy human volunteers, 362 end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients, and 17 patients with active or remissive bladder cancer (BCA).

The objectives of this study were to measure perceived stress, burnout, and utilization and perceived benefit of wellness practices among emergency medicine (EM) nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs). An additional aim was to evaluate attributions of stress to racism and the COVID-19 pandemic. A 28-item electronic survey of ED NPs/PAs at 3 hospitals was used to measure respondents' perceived stress (Perceived Stress Scale), stress attributed to COVID-19 and systemic racism, burnout (2-item measure), and utilization and helpfulness of wellness practices.

The objective of this study was to develop an immediate release (IR), crystalline solid dispersion (CSD) formulation of Mefenamic acid (MFA) by hot-melt-extrusion (HME) and assess the impact of drug loading on process parameters, product physico-chemical properties and product performance. An HME process to produce a range of MFA-Soluplus®-Sorbitol polymer matrix CSD formulations was developed based on rheological screening assays of physical mixtures (PM). Investigating the spatial distribution of genetic and phenotypic variation can provide insights into the evolutionary processes that shape diversity in natural systems. We characterized patterns of genetic and phenotypic diversity to learn about drivers of colour-pattern diversification in red-eyed treefrogs (Agalychnis callidryas) in Costa Rica. Along the Pacific coast, red-eyed treefrogs have conspicuous leg colour patterning that transitions from orange in the north to purple in the south.

It is wrong to describe the COVID-19 pandemic as a 'black swan' (ie a catastrophic event that no one saw coming). Far more apt would be to call it a 'grey rhino' - something that has long been predicted but overlooked by leadership the world over. The fiberoptic microneedle device (FMD) is a fused-silica microcatheter capable of co-delivery of fluids and light that has been developed for convection-enhanced delivery and photothermal treatments of glioblastoma. Here we investigate the biocompatibility of FMD fragments chronically implanted in the rat brain in the context of evaluating potential mechanical device failure.
