Article Synopsis
  • The presence of liver metastases in pancreatic cancer is usually a serious condition that typically requires palliative care rather than aggressive treatment.
  • Some doctors are exploring if surgery could help certain patients with isolated liver metastases.
  • Research shows that removing liver tumors can help some patients live longer, especially if the liver disease develops after initial treatments, but the benefits for those with tumors that occur at the same time as pancreatic cancer aren't clear.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how different solvents (isopropanol, ethanol, methanol, toluene, and acetonitrile) affect the solubility, crystallizability, and nucleation of tolfenamic acid (TFA) through experimental studies and intermolecular modeling.
  • Isopropanol shows the highest solubility for TFA, with strong solvent-solute interactions leading to greater than ideal solubility, while the crystallizability order varies across solvents, being lowest in isopropanol and highest in acetonitrile.
  • Nucleation occurs progressively in all solvents, with isopropanol exhibiting higher interfacial tension and larger critical nucleus radius, resulting in a lower nucleation rate

Article Synopsis
  • Resection is the only curative treatment for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma, but it carries high risks of complications and potential for disease recurrence, prompting the need to identify patients who may not benefit from surgery.
  • This study analyzed data from 27 referral centers and developed a scoring system based on several clinical factors (e.g., ASA score, bilirubin levels, tumor size) to predict which patients fall into a "futile group," where surgical outcomes are unfavorable.
  • The scoring system categorizes patients into low, intermediate, and high-risk classes, providing a useful tool to determine whether surgery or alternative treatments would be more appropriate based on preoperative assessments.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system of genetically susceptible individuals elicits a reaction to gluten causing small intestine damage. If left undiagnosed and untreated, the resulting nutrition malabsorption can lead to anemia, bone disease, growth faltering, or other consequences. The condition is lifelong and lacks a cure; the only treatment is lifelong adherence to a gluten-free diet (GFD).

Fine chemicals produced via batch crystallization with properties dependent on the crystal size distribution require precise control of supersaturation, which drives the evolution of crystal size over time. Model predictive control (MPC) of supersaturation using a mechanistic model to represent the behavior of a crystallization process requires less experimental time and resources compared with fully empirical model-based control methods. Experimental characterization of the hexamine-ethanol crystallization system was performed in order to collect the parameters required to build a one-dimensional (1D) population balance model (PBM) in gPROMS FormulatedProducts software (Siemens-PSE Ltd.

Clinical phenotyping is often a foundational requirement for obtaining datasets necessary for the development of digital health applications. Traditionally done via manual abstraction, this task is often a bottleneck in development due to time and cost requirements, therefore raising significant interest in accomplishing this task via in-silico means. Nevertheless, current in-silico phenotyping development tends to be focused on a single phenotyping task resulting in a dearth of reusable tools supporting cross-task generalizable in-silico phenotyping.

The effectiveness of nitrogen removal in wetlands relies heavily on the biological processes that control its removal. Here, we used δN and δO of nitrate (NO) to assess the presence and the dominance of transformation processes of nitrogen in two urban water treatment wetlands in Victoria, Australia over two rainfall events. Laboratory incubation experiments were undertaken in both light and dark to measure the isotopic fractionation factor of nitrogen assimilation (by periphyton and algae) and benthic denitrification (using bare sediment).

The causes for variability of pro-inflammatory surface antigens that affect gut commensal/opportunistic dualism within the phylum remain unclear (1, 2). Using the classical lipopolysaccharide/O-antigen ' operon' in as a surface antigen model (5-gene-cluster ), and a recent typing strategy for strain classification (3), we characterized the architecture/conservancy of the entire operon in . Analyzing complete genomes, we discovered that most have the operon fragmented into non-random gene-singlets and/or doublets/triplets, termed 'minioperons'.
