Elevated aminotransaminases and hyperbilirubinemia are common in primary Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) infection in the adult and pediatric population and the disease course is usually subclinical and self-limited. However, EBV-induced hepatitis is an uncommon diagnosis, accounting for less than 1% of acute hepatitis causes. Acute EBV-hepatitis usually affects immunocompromised and older populations, with nearly half of patients being aged greater than 60 years.
