Objective: To determine the effect of gastric residual aspiration and evaluation on preterm very low birth weight infants' gastrointestinal function, intestinal inflammation, and gastrointestinal mucosal bleeding.

Study Design: This single-center, randomized trial compared omission of gastric residuals vs prefeed gastric residuals in 143 infants ≤32 weeks of gestation with a birthweight of ≤1250 g for 6 weeks after birth. Serum levels of gastrin and motilin were collected between 14 and 21 days of life.
