Latin American countries are distinguished by their highly admixed populations, characterized by a significant preservation of Native American matrilineal ancestry. This contrasts with the paternal lineages, which exhibit different patterns due to pronounced sex-biased mating practices during the colonial period. Uniparental genetic markers have been instrumental in population genetics, facilitating the reconstruction of human settlement histories and serving forensic identification purposes.

  • High-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer patients in Latin America have experienced BCG shortages, prompting studies on the effectiveness of reduced-dose (RD) versus full-dose (FD) BCG treatments.
  • A retrospective study on 200 patients revealed that those receiving FD BCG had significantly lower recurrence rates and progression to muscle-invasive bladder cancer compared to those on RD BCG.
  • Although RD treatment had fewer treatment discontinuations due to toxicity, it was linked to poorer oncological outcomes, suggesting that full-dose BCG is more effective for high-risk patients.

Selective Plane Illumination Microscopy (SPIM) has become an emerging technology since its first application for 3D in-vivo imaging of the development of a living organism. An extensive number of works have been published, improving both the speed of acquisition and the resolution of the systems. Furthermore, multispectral imaging allows the effective separation of overlapping signals associated with different fluorophores from the spectrum over the whole field-of-view of the analyzed sample.

Neocaridina davidi, a small freshwater shrimp native to Asia, specifically China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, possesses remarkable resistance to poor water quality and offers various advantages over other invertebrate species to examine crucial issues in neuroscience and other related areas. These advantages include robustness, ease of maintenance, and transparency, making them useful for in vivo studies with optical imaging techniques. Despite its suitability for research purposes, particularly in the fields of imaging and fluorescent techniques, the lack of attention given to this species has resulted in the absence of a robust and replicable sedation protocol for immobilization and safe manipulation.

Immune disorders arise from complex genetic and environmental factors, which lead to dysregulation at the cellular and inflammatory levels and cause tissue damage. Recent research highlights the crucial role of reactive antibodies in autoimmune diseases and graft rejection, but their complex determination poses challenges for clinical use. Therefore, our study aimed to ascertain whether the presence of reactive antibodies against membrane antigens in tissues from both animal models and humans could serve as biomarkers in patients with autoimmune disorders.

Background: In Santiago, Chile, where typhoid had been hyperendemic (1977-1991), we investigated whether residual chronic carriers could be detected among household contacts of non-travel-related typhoid cases occurring during 2017-2019.

Methods: Culture-confirmed cases were classified as autochthonous (domestically acquired) versus travel/immigration related. Household contacts of cases had stool cultures and serum Vi antibody measurements to detect chronic Salmonella Typhi carriers.

Amphibians are the most threatened species-rich vertebrate group, with species extinctions and population declines occurring globally, even in protected and seemingly pristine habitats. These 'enigmatic declines' are generated by climate change and infectious diseases. However, the consequences of these declines are undocumented as no baseline ecological data exists for most affected areas.

Objective: Post-stroke spasticity (PSS) is a common complication in stroke survivors, causing severe burden to patients living with it. The aim of this review was to conduct a cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) of the treatment of post-stroke spasticity, in adults, with abobotulinumtoxinA compared to the best supportive care, based on results from a systematic literature review. Given that abobotulinumtoxinA (aboBoNT-A) is always accompanied by the best supportive care treatment, the CEA compared aboBoNT-A plus the best supportive care with the best supportive care alone.

Despite its 2000 km long shoreline, to date less than 50 sponge species have been reported from the entire Peruvian coast. A large collecting effort targeting marine sponges was undertaken between 2007 and 2009, yielding a comprehensive collection of nearly 900 samples, whose taxonomic study is underway. Three new species of Hymedesmiidae are presently described from the Peruvian coast, all belonging in Hymedesmia (Hymedesmia), one of which also found in Chile.

Article Synopsis
  • Typhoid fever in Santiago, Chile saw a drastic reduction in cases from 128-220 per 100,000 people in the 1980s to less than 8 per 100,000 from the 1990s onwards due to targeted public health interventions.
  • Whole genome sequencing was used to compare the S. Typhi bacteria from the hyperendemic period of the 1980s to that of the nonendemic 2010s, revealing that the genotypes causing illness remained largely unchanged.
  • The persistence of certain historical genotypes suggests that chronic carriers from the 1980s may be responsible for the reoccurrence of the same strains, demonstrating a link between past and present typhoid cases
