Mistreatment, Abuse, and Gender-Based Violence During Childbirth: A Longitudinal Analysis of Obstetric Violence in México (2011-2021).

This longitudinal retrospective study of mistreatment, abuse, and gender-based violence during childbirth uses two population representative samples of Mexican women to analyze the incidence of obstetric violence in Mexico from 2011 to 2021. Our assessment is that there are more continuities than changes in the phenomenon and our study does not find evidence to support the claims of increases in obstetric violence during the 2020-2021 COVID-19 pandemic. Conceptually it differentiates between acts of violence, disrespect, and abuse, based on socially constructed gender differences (gender-based violence), and those more generally related to medical authoritarianism and the biomedical model that confers medical professionals a more powerful and higher status relative to that of their patients.

Individualized care for patients with intersex (differences of sex development): Diagnosis and treatment of aphallia.

This review discusses issues and concerns in the management of aphallia, updating status of a post-pubertal individual who required further surgery after having initial surgery for aphallia as an infant. Through this case, which discusses an 18-year-old young adult who had penile agenesis, who desired further phalloplasty involving glanuloplasty and implantation of an erectile device, we highlight the importance of periodic evaluation and close follow up. Surgery during infancy or early childhood to create a penis is important for gender development in a boy, especially if there were functional testes during fetal life, even if this surgery would only be the first stage.

Factors associated with small ruminant lentivirus infection in goat herds from Pernambuco state, Northeast region of Brazil.

Serum samples (n = 1532) were collected between May 2011 to April 2012 from goats from 76 herds (49 from dairy farms and 27 herds for genetic improvement) from three geographical regions from the state of Pernambuco, Brazil: Zona da Mata, Agreste, and Sertão. Samples were processed using agar gel immunodiffusion test, with p28 CAEV antigen. The objective was to determine the risk factors for small ruminant lentivirus (SRLV) in dairy goats and goats with high genetic value.

The influence of distal and proximal muscle activation on neural crosstalk.

Previous research has indicated that neural crosstalk is asymmetric, with the dominant effector exerting a stronger influence on the non-dominant effector than vice versa. Recently, it has been hypothesized that this influence is more substantial for proximal than distal effectors. The current investigation was designed to determine the effects of distal ((First Dorsal Interosseous (FDI)) and proximal (triceps brachii (TBI)) muscle activation on neural crosstalk.

Molecular characterization of Burkholderia mallei strains isolated from horses in Brazil (2014-2017).

Glanders is an infectious zoonosis caused by Burkholderia (B.) mallei that mainly affects equids. The objective of this work was to provide additional knowledge on the diversity of the strains circulating in Brazil.

Neo-phalloplasty in children and adolescents for acquired penile loss.

Introduction: From 2000 to 2019, the De Castro's neo-phalloplasty was used in 47 patients with congenital and acquired penile loss.

Purpose: Herein, the technical aspects of penile reconstruction and the outcomes in 17 children and adolescents treated for total or sub-total acquired penile loss are reported.

Material And Methods: The median age at the time of injury was 3 months (range: 2 days-15 years).

A salvage procedure for redo penile prosthesis implantation in phalloplasty (De castro technique) for congenital aphallia.

Introduction: We present a different salvage procedure for penile prosthesis implantation in a De Castro neophallus.

Methods: A patient with congenital aphallia had been operated at the age of 11. Ten years later he had two non successful attempts of prosthesis implantation.

Development of a DIVA ELISA for diagnosis of Aujeszky's disease using recombinant gE fused to thioredoxin as antigen.

The major control methods for Aujeszky's Disease (AD) involve SHV1 gE gene-deleted vaccines and ELISA for detection of specific gE antibodies in infected animals, distinguishing infected animals from vaccinated animals (DIVA). This work aimed to develop a DIVA ELISA recombinant gE (gErec) for AD diagnosis using recombinant gE fused to thioredoxin protein. The analytical sensitivity and specificity were assessed with World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) AD serum and sera from specific pathogen free (SPF), vaccinated SPF and AD-vaccinated SPF animals.

Hierarchy systems of the medical field in Mexico: a sociological analysis.

The aim of this paper is to describe the main systems of hierarchization in the Mexican medical field (and those of other similar Latin American countries). Drawing on Bourdieu's genetic structuralism, our hypothesis is that the structure of the medical field is closely correlated with the schemes of perception and appreciation of the medical field's agents. These schemes are rooted in hierarchical classifications by which work is organized and the main agents' prestige is allocated.

Obstetric Violence in Mexico: Results From a 2016 National Household Survey.

Obstetric violence has not received the same amount of interest as other forms of violence against women (VAW). We assess the prevalence and factors associated with experiences of obstetric violence (obstetric abuse and violence, and nonconsensual care) among women between 15 and 49 years of age in their latest childbirth within the last 5 years by using the 2016 National Survey on Household Relationship Dynamics. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and agar gel immunodiffusion assay for diagnosis of equine infectious anemia employing p26 protein fused to the maltose-binding protein.

A codon-optimized equine infectious anemia virus p26 gene was fused to a maltose-binding protein (MBP) and expressed in Escherichia coli for use as an antigen in agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for diagnosis of equine infectious anemia. An analysis of analytical sensitivity and specificity showed that the antigen MBP-p26rec reacted positively with a reference World Organization for Animal Health serum and demonstrated no cross-reaction against sera from vaccinated animals in either test. The diagnostic characteristics were evaluated and presented excellent values.

This text looks at the difference between sociology in medicine (collaborator of health institutions) and the sociology of medicine (independent of health institutions). If consistent, sociology in medicine should become a sociology of medicine. As an example, it is shown how the study of the social determinants of health and illness begins by assuming non-problematically the ontological reality of health and illness, but ends up problematizing the very concept of health-disease, demonstrating that the study of health determinants also requires the study of the determinants of the social construction of disease.

Identification and genetic characterization of classical swine fever virus isolates in Brazil: a new subgenotype.

The classical swine fever (CSF) is a highly contagious viral disease of pigs and wild boar. The CSF causes great economic losses for pork production and the occurrence of the disease is notifiable to the OIE. The objective of this work was to identify and characterize CSF virus isolates from Brazil.

Neophalloplasty in boys with aphallia: A systematic review.

Objective: Aphallia is a rare penile congenital abnormality. The aim of this systematic review was to assess all available literature on neophalloplasty in infancy with an interest in technical alternatives and clinical outcome.

Materials And Methods: We performed a Pubmed search using the terms: neophalloplasty, neophallus, and phalloplasty, and selected articles that presented technical alternatives for penile construction in cases of penile dysgenesis, especially aphallia in children and/or adolescents.

High-yield hydrogen production from biomass by in vitro metabolic engineering: Mixed sugars coutilization and kinetic modeling.

The use of hydrogen (H2) as a fuel offers enhanced energy conversion efficiency and tremendous potential to decrease greenhouse gas emissions, but producing it in a distributed, carbon-neutral, low-cost manner requires new technologies. Herein we demonstrate the complete conversion of glucose and xylose from plant biomass to H2 and CO2 based on an in vitro synthetic enzymatic pathway. Glucose and xylose were simultaneously converted to H2 with a yield of two H2 per carbon, the maximum possible yield.

This article documents the gender abuse that Mexican medical students face. The concept of medical socialization is analyzed, with emphasis on the problem of the mistreatment of medical students. The theoretical framework articulates ideas from Foucault and Goffman with the nodal points of Bourdieu using a gender focus.

Secretory expression of Porcine Circovirus Type 2 capsid protein in Pichia pastoris.

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is associated with postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). The PCV2 capsid (Cap) protein is a leading antigen candidate for vaccine and serological diagnostic testing, due to its immunogenic properties. In this study, the codon-optimized PCV2 Cap gene was cloned into a pPICZαA vector for secretory expression in the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris after methanol induction.

Production of Equine Infectious Anemia Virus (EIAV) antigen in Pichia pastoris.

Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) is a persistent lentivirus infection of horses which causes a chronic clinical condition with worldwide importance in veterinary medicine. The p26 protein is usually prepared for use as an antigen in serological tests for EIA diagnosis since it is a well-conserved gene sequence and very immunogenic. In view of the ability of yeast to make post-translational modifications of proteins, this study was carried out to allow Pichia pastoris to be used for the expression of a synthetic codon-optimized EIAV p26 gene.

Molecular epidemiology of bovine papillomatosis and the identification of a putative new virus type in Brazilian cattle.

Bovine papillomaviruses (BPVs) are a diverse group of double-stranded DNA viruses, of which 12 viral types have been detected and characterized so far. However, there is still a limited understanding of the diversity of BPV. Several putative new BPVs have been detected and some of these have been recently characterized as new viral types.
