The adnexa fetal tissues are sources of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) due to their noninvasive harvest, with all biological material discarded most of the time. MSCs are a promise regarding to their plasticity, self-renewal, differentiation potentials, immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, which have made clinical stem cell therapy a reality. The present study aimed to characterize and evaluate the immunomodulation ability of bovine mesenchymal cells collected from bovine amniotic fluid (bAFMSCs) isolated and subjected to sixth consecutive culture passages .

Analysis of root causes of problems affecting the quality of hospital administrative data: A systematic review and Ishikawa diagram.

Introduction: Administrative hospital databases represent an important tool for hospital financing in many national health systems and are also an important data source for clinical, epidemiological and health services research. Therefore, the data quality of such databases is of utmost importance. This paper aims to present a systematic review of root causes of data quality problems affecting administrative hospital data, creating a catalogue of potential issues for data quality analysts to explore.

Molecular cloning and characterization of pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone β-subunit cDNAs.

The common gonadotrophic hormone α-subunit (GTHα) has been previously isolated by our research group from A. gigas pituitaries; in the present work the cDNA sequences encoding FSHβ and LHβ subunits have also been isolated from the same species of fish. The FSH β-subunit consists of 126 amino acids with a putative 18 amino acid signal peptide and a 108 amino acid mature peptide, while the LH β-subunit consists of 141 amino acids with a putative 24 amino acid amino acid signal peptide and a 117 amino acid mature peptide.

Microfiltration of vinasse: sustainable strategy to improve its nutritive potential.

The purpose of this article was to evaluate and establish microfiltration (MF) operating conditions for vinasse (ethanol industries wastewater also known as stillage, slop, distillery effluent or dunder) concentration aiming to improve the use of its nutritive potential. The operating conditions influence permeate flux that has been evaluated by monitoring the flow rate profile during the operation on bench scale in different conditions (feed pH, aeration condition and recovery rate). From the results found, the process scale up was then effected.

Leishmania metacyclogenesis is promoted in the absence of purines.

Leishmania parasites, the causative agent of leishmaniasis, are transmitted through the bite of an infected sand fly. Leishmania parasites present two basic forms known as promastigote and amastigote which, respectively, parasitizes the vector and the mammalian hosts. Infection of the vertebrate host is dependent on the development, in the vector, of metacyclic promastigotes, however, little is known about the factors that trigger metacyclogenesis in Leishmania parasites.

Nosocomial infection and characterization of extended-spectrum β-lactamases-producing Enterobacteriaceae in Northeast Brazil.

Introduction: Extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) are enzymes that degrade β-lactam antibiotics and have been reported to be an important cause of nosocomial infection in worldwide.

Methods: During 2009, 659 enterobacteria strains were isolated from different clinical specimens and tested for ESBL production. The disk approximation test, combined disk method and addition of clavulanic acid were used for phenotypic detection of the ESBL-producing strains and PCR for detection of the bla(TEM) and bla(CTX-M) genes.

Mechanism of action and morphologic changes in the alveolar bone in response to selective alveolar decortication-facilitated tooth movement.

Background And Purpose: The aim of this study was to test if corticotomy-induced osteoclastogenesis and bone remodeling underlie orthodontic tooth movement and how selective alveolar decortication enhances the rate of tooth movement.

Materials And Methods: A total of 114 Sprague-Dawley rats were included in 3 treatment groups: selective alveolar decortication alone (SADc); tooth movement alone (TM); and "combined" therapy (SADc + TM). Surgery was performed around the buccal and palatal aspects of the left maxillary first molar tooth and included 5 decortication dots on each side.

Thoracic sympathectomy at the level of the fourth and fifth ribs for the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis.

Objective: To describe the clinical results and the degree of satisfaction of patients submitted to thoracic sympathectomy at the level of the fourth and fifth ribs (R4-R5) for the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis.

Methods: We included 118 patients diagnosed with axillary hyperhidrosis and having undergone axillary sympathectomy at the R4-R5 level between March of 2003 and December of 2007 at the Paraná Federal University Hospital de Clínicas, located in the city of Curitiba, Brazil. All procedures were carried out by the same surgeon.

[Medial canthus necrosis associated with Hansen's disease: case report].

In the present case we deal with a medial eyelid necrosis and injury of the canalicular system in a patient in treatment for lepromatous leprosy. Histology of the necrotic lesion showed granulomatous inflammatory reaction with accumulation of histiocytes and presence of alcohol-acid resistant bacilli. After medical treatment, the patient had a spontaneous recovery of the medial canthus architecture but with complete destruction of the canalicular system.

[Conjunctival fibrous histiocytoma simulating atipical pterygium in the Amazon region: case report].

An inedited case in the Brazilian literature of conjunctival fibrous histiocytoma discovered during a wide scale community project accomplished by the team of the Center of Reference in Ophthalmology of the Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade Federal de Goiás in the Amazon region is reported. A 38 year-old caucasian woman presented with a vascularized lesion on the medial portion of the bulbar conjunctiva and caruncular region of the right eye with extension for the limbus and invading about 2 mm of the medial cornea resembling a pterygium. Pathologic findings revealed that the lesion was constituted by spindle-shaped cells, with storiform arrangement, and large histocytelike cells.

Flow cytometric analysis using SYBR Green I for genome size estimation in coffee.

Plant genome size has been measured by flow cytometry using propidium iodide as a dye for nuclear DNA staining. However, some authors have reported the occurrence of genome size estimation errors, especially in plants rich in secondary metabolites, such as the coffee tree. In this context, we tested an alternative cytometric protocol using the SYBR Green I as a fluorochrome for stoichiometrically staining nuclear double-stranded DNA in Coffea canephora (2x) and Coffea arabica (4x).

[An advanced case of basosquamous carcinoma of the orbit: case report].

Basosquamous carcinoma is a rare tumor with features of both basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma, linked by a transition area. It is a rare epithelial neoplasm with a tendency for local recurrence. It also has a high incidence of distant metastasis, a condition that differentiates it from the basal cell carcinoma.

[Balloon-catheter dilatation (dacrioplasty) for congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction treatment].

Purpose: To verify the results of balloon-catheter dilatation for the treatment of congenital lacrimal duct obstruction. To the best of author's knowledge this procedure has not been previously used in Brazil and deserves scientific studies.

Methods: Children between 2 and 5 years old, with congenital lacrimal duct obstruction, were treated with balloon-catheter dilatation (Lacricath).

Morphological aspects of tympanic bulla after ventral osteotomy in cats.

Purpose: To evaluate tympanic bulla healing after experimental ventral osteotomy in cats.

Methods: Twenty adult cats were submitted to unilateral ventral bulla osteotomy and divided into two groups: cats of A1 group (n=10) were euthanized at 8 weeks and cats of A2 group (n=10), at 16 weeks postoperative.

Results: Signs of Horner's syndrome or damage to the inner ear were not found.

Outpatient percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy in selected head and neck cancer patients.

Background: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is a relatively simple and safe method of providing access for enteral feeding. The procedure is usually performed in hospitalized patients. The feasibility of PEG as an outpatient procedure has not been well estabilished in the medical literature.

Renal ischemia and reperfusion injury: influence of chorpromazine on renal function and lipid peroxidation.

Purpose: To evaluate the influence of chlorpromazine (CPZ) on renal function and lipid peroxidation in a rat model of kidney ischemia/reperfusion injury.

Methods: Forty eight Wistar rats underwent a laparotomy for hilar clamping of left kidney with a bulldog clamp for 60 minutes followed by organ reperfusion and contralateral nephrectomy. Of these, 26 received 3mg/kg of CPZ intravenously 15 minutes before renal ischemia (G-E) while the remaining 22 were used as ischemic control group (G-C).

Modeling of trabecular bone and lamina dura following selective alveolar decortication in rats.

Background: Modifying the balance between resorption and apposition through selectively injuring the cortical plate of the alveolus has been an approach to speed tooth movement and is referred to as periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics. The aim of this study was to investigate the alveolar response to corticotomy as a function of time and proximity to the surgical injury in a rat model.

Methods: Maxillary buccal and lingual cortical plates were injured in 36 healthy adult rats adjacent to the upper left first molars.

Risk index for death by infective endocarditis: a multivariate logistic model.

Objective: This study aimed at identifying predictive variables for in-hospital mortality, calculating the probability of death and creating a risk index for death by infective endocarditis by comparing two methods using a Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted of 186 consecutive cases of confirmed infective endocarditis divided into two groups: discharged (137) and in-hospital death (49). Based on the odds ratios obtained by multivariate analysis, the probability of death was calculated and a mortality risk index created.

Enantioselective determination of ibuprofen in plasma by high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray mass spectrometry.

The enantioselective analysis of ibuprofen (IBU), a chiral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, in human plasma was carried out by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS). The plasma samples were prepared by liquid-liquid extraction using hexane:ethyl acetate (8:2, v/v). The HPLC chiral resolution of IBU was obtained using a chiral stationary phase based on a tris-(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate) amylose derivative, under reversed phase conditions (CHIRALPAK AD-RH column), using a mobile phase consisting of methanol:water (8:2, v/v), containing 0.

Guided bone regeneration to repair an osseous defect.

The ultimate goal of orthodontic therapy is to establish functional and esthetic dental relationships in a balanced facial pattern. In patients with compromised periodontal support, the use of multidisciplinary treatment plans is essential in attaining these goals. This case report includes a thorough documentation of the orthodontic and periodontal treatments to demonstrate the effectiveness of guided bone regenerative procedures combined with a bone allograft to aid in correcting a dental malocclusion.
