Introduction: Middle Meningeal Artery Embolization (MMAE) in patients with chronic SubDural Hematoma (cSDH) is a novel treatment approach, albeit the specific role of MMAE in the treatment of cSDH is not yet defined.

Research Question: The aim of this work is to provide a consensus-based statement from a multidisciplinary panel on the current role of MMAE in patients with cSDH.

Materials And Methods: A literature search was performed using the keywords MMAE and cSDH.

Among these techniques, key modalities include esophageal pressure measurement (including derived pressures), lung and respiratory muscle ultrasounds, electrical impedance tomography, the monitoring of diaphragm electrical activity, and assessment of flow index. These tools play a critical role in assessing essential parameters such as lung recruitment and overdistention, lung aeration and morphology, ventilation/perfusion distribution, inspiratory effort, respiratory drive, respiratory muscle contraction, and patient-ventilator synchrony.

Efficacy of endotracheal intubation in helicopter cabin vs. ground: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Pre-hospital endotracheal intubation (ETI) is a sophisticated procedure with a comparatively high failure rate. Especially, ETI in confined spaces may result in higher difficulty, longer times, and a higher failure rate. This study analyses if Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) intubation (time-to) success are influenced by noise, light, and restricted space in comparison to ground intubation.

Na,K-ATPase activity promotes macropinocytosis in colon cancer via Wnt signaling.

Recent research has shown that membrane trafficking plays an important role in canonical Wnt signaling through sequestration of the β-catenin destruction complex inside multivesicular bodies (MVBs) and lysosomes. In this study, we introduce Ouabain, an inhibitor of the Na,K-ATPase pump that establishes electric potentials across membranes, as a potent inhibitor of Wnt signaling. We find that Na,K-ATPase levels are elevated in advanced colon carcinoma, that this enzyme is elevated in cancer cells with constitutively activated Wnt pathway and is activated by GSK3 inhibitors that increase macropinocytosis.

This Issue of Cells & Development celebrates the centennial of the Spemann-Mangold organizer experiment. This was the most famous experiment in embryology and its reverberations have greatly influenced developmental biology. This historical issue describes the impact of the discovery and is a prelude to the second volume of this Festschrift, which will consist of the proceedings of the international meeting to be held in Freiburg University, at the place where the organizer was discovered.

Unexpected intensive care unit admission after surgery: impact on clinical outcome.

Purpose Of Review: This review is focused on providing insights into unplanned admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) after surgery, including its causes, effects on clinical outcome, and potential strategies to mitigate the strain on healthcare systems.

Recent Findings: Postoperative unplanned ICU admission results from a combination of several factors including patient's clinical status, the type of surgical procedure, the level of supportive care and clinical monitoring outside the ICU, and the unexpected occurrence of major perioperative and postoperative complications. The actual impact of unplanned admission to ICU after surgery on clinical outcome remains uncertain, given the conflicting results from several observational studies and recent randomized clinical trials.

Purpose Of Review: The present review summarizes the current knowledge and the barriers encountered when implementing tailoring lung-protective ventilation strategies to individual patients based on advanced monitoring systems.

Recent Findings: Lung-protective ventilation has become a pivotal component of perioperative care, aiming to enhance patient outcomes and reduce the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs). High-quality research has established the benefits of strategies such as low tidal volume ventilation and low driving pressures.

Personalized Noninvasive Respiratory Support in the Perioperative Setting: State of the Art and Future Perspectives.

Noninvasive respiratory support (NRS), including high-flow nasal oxygen therapy (HFNOT), noninvasive ventilation (NIV) and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), are routinely used in the perioperative period. : This narrative review provides an overview on the perioperative use of NRS. Preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative respiratory support is discussed, along with potential future areas of research.

Here, we show that a macropinocytosis activator, the tumor promoter phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA), enhances Wnt signaling.

Intraoperative individualization of positive-end-expiratory pressure through electrical impedance tomography or esophageal pressure assessment: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Purpose: This systematic review of randomized-controlled trials (RCTs) with meta-analyses aimed to compare the effects on intraoperative arterial oxygen tension to inspired oxygen fraction ratio (PaO/FiO), exerted by positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) individualized trough electrical impedance tomography (EIT) or esophageal pressure (Pes) assessment (intervention) vs. PEEP not tailored on EIT or Pes (control), in patients undergoing abdominal or pelvic surgery with an open or laparoscopic/robotic approach.

Methods: PUBMED®, EMBASE®, and Cochrane Controlled Clinical trials register were searched for observational studies and RCTs from inception to the end of August 2022.

Addition of exogenous diacylglycerol enhances Wnt/β-catenin signaling through stimulation of macropinocytosis.

Activation of Wnt signaling triggers macropinocytosis and drives many tumors. We now report that the exogenous addition of the second messenger lipid sn-1,2 DAG to the culture medium rapidly induces macropinocytosis. This is accompanied by potentiation of the effects of added Wnt3a recombinant protein or the glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3) inhibitor lithium chloride (LiCl, which mimics Wnt signaling) in luciferase transcriptional reporter assays.
