Article Synopsis
- West Nile Virus (WNV) has become widespread in North America, prompting the need for effective laboratory testing, particularly through IgM capture enzyme immunoassays (EIA) that became available in 2003.
- A study in Alberta tested nearly 3,000 samples, identifying 266 WNV cases, finding that sensitivity of the assays improved significantly after the first week of illness, reaching up to 97% after day 8.
- The Focus IgM EIA showed high specificity (98.9%), while the first-generation Panbio had lower specificity (82.9%); both tests were effective for diagnosing WNV when follow-up samples were taken after 8 days.
