Background: Obesity is a chronic disease characterized by excess body fat and is a risk factor for other chronic non-communicable diseases. Its multifactorial and complex nature makes its management a challenge for health services. This manuscript presents an investigation protocol that aims to analyze the effectiveness of collective nutritional interventions for obesity management applicable to primary health care.

Article Synopsis
  • Bovine laminitis is a significant health issue in dairy and beef farms, leading to welfare and economic challenges, but its underlying metabolic and inflammatory causes are not well understood, complicating diagnostic efforts.
  • This study develops a non-invasive veterinary cerumenomic assay using earwax metabolites to effectively identify bovine laminitis through advanced gas chromatography and mass spectrometry techniques.
  • The findings highlight specific volatile metabolites, such as p-cresol and formamide, as potential biomarkers for diagnosing bovine laminitis, showcasing promising diagnostic accuracy and paving the way for earlier detection in affected cattle.

Background: Invasive Africanized honey bees potentially compete with cavity-nesting birds in South America. However, the impacts of this competition and its conservation consequences to threatened species are poorly known. We quantified the presence of these bees and assessed their competition for cliff cavities used by nesting Lear's macaws Anodorhynchus leari, a globally endangered parrot endemic to the Caatinga biome of Brazil.

Palicourea marcgravii is the most important toxic plant in Brazil due to its acute toxicity (sudden death), palatability, cumulative effect and broad geographical distribution. The study aimed to evaluate the resistance between cattle of different breeds by experimental intoxication of Palicourea marcgravii. Eighteen males were randomly divided into three groups (Nellore, Curraleiro Pe-Duro and Pantaneiro), six animals in each group.

White adipose tissue (WAT) plays a fundamental role in maintaining energy balance and important endocrine functions. The loss of WAT modifies adipokine secretion and disrupts homeostasis, potentially leading to severe metabolic effects and a reduced quality of life. Doxorubicin is a chemotherapeutic agent used clinically because of its good effectiveness against various types of cancer.

The present study was carried out to identify the diencephalic and midbrain neurons in pigeons that respond to stress (using restraint as the stressor) and determine if the urocortinergic neurons (expressing urocortin 1, Ucn1) below the midbrain central gray are among those activated. Immunolabeling for the immediate early gene Egr-1 was used to identity stress-responsive neurons, following 1-3 h of restraint. A large increase in nuclear Egr-1 immunolabeling was observed in several dorsomedial thalamic nuclei, and in a stream of neurons extending from below the mesencephalic central gray (overlapping the nucleus of Darkschewitsch at these levels) to just anterior to the nucleus of Edinger-Westphal.
